Johannesburg - Just months after Leigh Matthews was murdered, her father, Rob, despite his own heartache, provided a woman with an opportunity to lead a normal life.
A police source told Beeld on Tuesday that in May last year Matthews paid thousands of rands for a woman, who was a drug addict, to be treated at the Phambili transformation centre in Muldersdrift.
According to the source, who wanted to remain anonymous, the woman worked as a prostitute and was "badly hooked on heroin".
Magda Venter of Phambili confirmed on Tuesday that she had received the money shortly after the woman arrived at the centre.
"People usually give money to the police to help such women," Venter said.
Matthews confirmed that his family had helped the woman.
He said: "It was the police's initiative. If it weren't for them, we wouldn't even have been aware of the girl's need.
"After our own dreadful experience, we were
glad to be able to help someone."
