Lesbian rapist gets bail

Cape Town - A Gugulethu man who allegedly raped a lesbian to make her heterosexual, was released on R500 bail by the Wynberg District Court on Thursday.

Rape perpetrated to change a gay person's sexuality is commonly known as "correctional rape".

The man may not be named until the start of his trial.

He appeared in the Wynberg District Court before Magistrate Halfisa Mohamed.

Prosecutor Nazlie Januarie told the court the police investigation had been completed.

She said she had discussed the possibility of the man's release on bail with the victim, aged 30, who had no objections.

Legal Aid defence attorney Bulelwa Blou told the court her client had a clean record and no pending criminal cases or outstanding warrants for his arrest. She said he could afford R500.

Mohamed ruled that, because the victim had no objection to the man's release on bail, his continued incarceration was not in the interests of justice.

As a bail condition, she banned him from Guguletu, where he and the alleged victim live, and said he would have to take up accommodation elsewhere.

She postponed the case to June 23.
