Life prisoners given parole

2011-04-08 20:08

Johannesburg - Correctional Services Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula announced on Friday that 30 prisoners sentenced to life prison terms before March 1994 will be released.

She said another 18 would be granted day parole. Her announcement follows a Constitutional Court ruling last September that offenders sentenced to life imprisonment before March 1, 1994 could be considered for parole after serving 15 years of their sentence.

Currently inmates sentenced to life imprisonment must serve at least serve 20 years of their sentence, but prior to March 1994 the minimum sentence before parole consideration was 15 years.

She said 64 prisoners had been considered for parole and 30 had been refused parole.

She said ultimately there were 385 inmates affected by the ruling. She hoped to have adjudicated on 95 inmates by next week Tuesday.

She declined to name any of the inmates who had been considered for parole or go into any detail about the crimes for which they were convicted.

She said some had been convicted of common crimes while others had been convicted of crimes they had committed during the political violence of the 1980s and early 1990s.

She urged the public to remain calm.

"We should not go into a state of panic because 385 people are eligible for parole," she said.

      Zion - 2011-04-09 08:14

Auntie Helen must really be giving the ANC sleepless nights and nightmares. So Auntie Helen may be charged with abuse of the leading party.

  • Gungets Tuft - 2011-04-08 20:47

Listen up Stukkie. Few of us are panicking about you releasing 385 prisoners. I am panicking about the 50000 criminals that have failed to arrest and put IN @#$@ing jail. How about a bloody swap. Go right ahead and release them, just as long as you lock up 10 for every one of the okes you release.

  • Heks - 2011-04-08 20:58

Nothing is surprising in this country!Worked out good for the ANC though it would not have made any difference with them in or out of jail! Viva Freedom Viva!!!

  • Gert@swart - 2011-04-08 21:09

    Stupid bitch

      D N - 2011-04-08 21:55

Mundu let me tell you that it does not help to sow insults all over the place. look at yourself. Don't you feel ashamed to talk behind curtains. No one sees you. Do not be a coward, please. Come out and talk sense. Going around insulting people will take you nowhere. I vote ANC, what about you?

      mr.flamer - 2011-04-09 08:58

yeah guys... D N is right.... Think of it logically... letting prisoners out of jail isnt a bad thing is it... they are all nice people there in jail, picking flowers ect. Scary thing is that this they are reporting now... how many are let out without Joe-public's knowledge. And I vote DA for your information D N... maybe you should come have a look what DA is doing for the western cape and compare to the other provinces ruled by ANC.... tsk tsk

      LBS - 2011-04-11 15:14

Stupid D N, Mundu has nothing to be ashamed of - as long as he does not vote for the ANC.

  • TheEmperorWithanO - 2011-04-08 21:36

esih ja sometimes we do stupid things.......... i am not impressed by this as an ANC supporter

  • barry.mcbride - 2011-04-08 21:51

What’s the problem? Why bring up the ANC when “offenders sentenced to life imprisonment before March 1, 1994 could be considered for parole after serving 15 years of their sentence?”

      mr.flamer - 2011-04-09 09:00

What is the reasoning behind LIFE sentence when they only serve 15 years... this is why people do crime... "I get 1 year for theft... and ill only be in jail for 3 weeks"

  • Wagga - 2011-04-08 21:51

so the farm murders is going to increase 3 fold, damn this government.

  • Assegaai - 2011-04-08 22:11

Would love to see the list of names?

  • Trollolol - 2011-04-08 22:23

I honestly don't see the difference between a murder or rape that took place pre-1994 and a murder or rape that took place post 1994... P.s. This article failed to mention that it only took this uneducated woman one week to come to a decision regarding all of these criminal scumbags.

  • Mariano Cast - 2011-04-08 22:33

    Give them a medal,too.

  • Tubes - 2011-04-08 23:13

Is this correct, the minister said "others had been convicted of crimes they had committed during the political violence of the 1980s and early 1990" So when the ANC came into power in 1994 they never bothered about releasing their "freedom fighters" from jail, too busy at the trough. If I was one of the "freedom fighters" incarcerated by the NP government and not released in 1994, by the ANC and only now get my freedom 17yrs later who would I be a threat to!! Can they do anything right.

  • Buzzbar - 2011-04-09 00:01

should have hanged them to begin with.

  • ?? - 2011-04-09 00:03

I need a judge or attorney to explain something to me,because the maths doesnt make sense. What exactly is a life sentence? Is it when u get sentenced to jail for the rest of your life? YES or NO If YES,then how can you come out? If NO,then why does it say life in jail? Do you have to be sentenced to more than one life sentence before the possibility of u coming out is not allowed? Thanks

  • Marc-Andre - 2011-04-09 00:12

385 more votes for the ANC. They need every vote they can get...

  • Bexiebee - 2011-04-09 06:08

How stupid! Then again, they have to make room in the prisons so I'm hoping that Clive Derby-Lewis' "space" is made available for another rapist or murderer.

  • Capeboy - 2011-04-09 07:25

STUPID Government and ANC who are all thieves and murderers. What do you expect from stupid and uneducated people ?

  • Capeboy - 2011-04-09 07:54

Publish a list of names of murderers to be released. The public have a right to know and we as voters have the right to say yes or no!

  • vusi22 - 2011-04-09 08:05

This is a global norm. There is nothing strange. Even during the race rule hardened criminals were paroled

  • Julius - 2011-04-09 08:54

The ANC is always looking after the interests of criminals. Need a few more votes in the election, I presume

  • Vivafrica - 2011-04-09 08:56

Ya nee. Let the guilty walk free. Life sentences could only have been murder and rape crimes. Lets wait for them to commit a crime again and then Correctional Services Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula can be be held accountable. Or maybe trigger happy cops can then serve justice . Vivafrica

  • Mike - 2011-04-09 09:02

She and the rest of her cronies have obviously never been exposed to the horrors of what these bastards committed, which resulted in them getting life. Imagine how those feel who were directly affected by the murders and plundering that these scum bags committed in the first place. Now they should be welcomed back into society! You've got to be joking

  • BilboBaggins - 2011-04-09 09:28

And may YOU and YOUR CHILDREN also pay the price for this partial serving of sentences - oh but I forgot - YOU have a horde of bodyguards and WE don't. Why don't you just let the whole lot of rapists and murderers and thieves out? Only in SOUTH AFRICA!!!!!

  • Gazza - 2011-04-09 11:49

I am sure the relatives of the victims are jumping with joy - more votes for the DA - dumbass ANC chops.

  • Wishbone - 2011-04-09 18:17

It will be interesting to see if Derby-Lewis is one of the parolees. However I suspect that we live in a nation of double standards ie a hypocracy!
