Johannesburg - A group of ANC members have been elected to pave the way forward for the party in Limpopo after its provincial structure was dissolved, the ruling party said on Monday.

A meeting at the weekend at the University of Limpopo introduced "the newly-appointed provincial task team that has now resumed [a] leadership role together with the ANC [national executive committee] NEC deployees," the African National Congress said in a statement.

Philemon Mdaka was elected as chairperson, Yvonne Makola as deputy chairperson, Joy Matshoge as secretary and Stan Motimele as her deputy.

Along with another 12 people elected onto the task team, Thembi Mwendamusi was appointed treasurer.

At the weekend's meeting, ANC president Jacob Zuma addressed the reasons for the dissolution of the PEC as well as the way forward.

"He also briefed the [provincial general council] PGC on the positive response of the outgone [sic] leadership."

Zuma told the attendees that former provincial chairperson Cassel Mathale and former provincial secretary Soviet Lekganyane - on behalf of the disbanded PEC - "welcomed the decision of the ANC NEC and pledged to support those given the leadership responsibility that will culminate in a provincial conference within nine months to elect a new PEC".

Earlier this month, the provinces' PEC was dissolved after a decision taken by the national NEC.

At the time, ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe said Limpopo's PEC was dissolved because of its "un-ANC behaviour and institutionalised factional conduct".
