Limpopo - Officials have been deployed to the fire ravaged Waterberg district to assess if the damage warrants a "disaster" status.

The blaze, which started on Friday, has killed a firefighter and damaged at least 80 000 hectares of farmland, mostly for game farming.

Mopping up operations were under way.

Provincial agriculture MEC Joy Matshoge said a team has been deployed to the area to assess the damage.

The wildfire, which started amid a heatwave, had destroyed farmhouses, vehicles and four lodges.

Firefighter Samuel Rabokgopa was killed on Monday when heavy winds changed direction and left firefighters surrounded by flames.

Two of his colleagues were injured.

Working on Fire provincial general manager Sam Maepa said they were being assisted by firefighters from Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

The wildfire posed a threat to the game hunting industry in the province as the affected region attracted dozens of international hunters during hunting season.

Matshoge extended condolences to the firefighter’s family and said the department would release information in terms of the damage soon.
