Limpopo cop kills girlfriend, self

2012-05-21 12:35

Johannesburg - A police constable shot and killed his girlfriend, also a constable, at their house in Namakgale before committing suicide, Limpopo police said on Monday.

Lieutenant Colonel Ronel Otto said the bodies of Rhulani Linda Mavunda, 35, and her boyfriend, Sipho Phalane, 32, were found on Monday.

"Both had bullet wounds to the head and they were declared dead on the scene."

It was believed Phalane shot Mavunda before shooting himself. A case of murder and an inquest had been opened.

Police officers with emotional problems were urged to make use of the supporting services provided, said provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Simon Mpembe.

It seems as the only solution these days.

  • Mpotsiseng - 2012-05-21 13:01

All cops should leave their guns at the police station when they go off duty...

      UmshiniWami - 2012-05-21 13:08

Mpotsiseng, you are right. but more than that, the 27000 cops who are too inept to be able to pass the basic requirements to be allowed to carry a gun (as per the LAW) and are still allowed to be armed should be dismissed as they are unable to LEGALLY fulfill their basic duties. then ALL of them should be tested for Aptitude to the job and mental-stability. the 20 or so cops that will be left can be the nucleous to the new SAPS.

      Brim - 2012-05-21 13:21

A lot of cops save lives off duty hence taking their guns home...but I guess that's only in america...

      corrie.bresler - 2012-05-21 13:31

Agree, but then they won't be able to augment their salaries by renting their fire-arms to criminals. (the case of the Durban Metro cop shot with a colleague's pistol, and I know this was Metro and not SAPS. Also the three magistrates involved in a robbery wearing SAPS uniforms).

      Vandross - 2012-05-21 17:14

That won't help because I can go to work on my shift and then take a gun and report to the commision that I am going to patrol and go and shoot girlfriends.

      Khanyisa - 2012-05-22 00:54

As a police official I 100% support your statement

  • UmshiniWami - 2012-05-21 13:05

And yet one more person MURDERED by a cop. when are they going to start testing the IQ and aptitude of the morons they recruited to the SAPS and get rid of them? (and please take their guns away before you send them packing)

  • Luvo - 2012-05-21 13:07

Guess it is time for the SAPS to conduct periodical psychological assessments on their members as this kind of thing is becoming more and more prevalent

  • Ntobane Setabola - 2012-05-21 13:12

A gun was made and fashioned 4 no other skill and no other purpose than aiming 2 kill...cops are always armed and ready 2 kill us the community...\r\nThanx this time it took the lives of its users.\r\nCops kill people more than thugs do

      UmshiniWami - 2012-05-21 13:24

Ntobela, you are so right. Unfortunately in this country the cops are THUGS. It goes back to how (and why) they are recruited, how and by whom they are trained and how and by whom they are led. Until this changes, we are going to see much more incidents wehre innocent citizens are hurt and killed by cops.

      Msika - 2012-05-21 13:46

Moral of the Story: Stay away from cops at all cost.

  • Sharon - 2012-05-21 13:12

Are there statistics regarding these incidents, or are we not allowed access to those either? It does seem to happen a lot lately, where police officers kill their loved ones...

  • Rob - 2012-05-21 13:13

Being a policemans girlfriend or wife is dangerous it appears. One should feel protected married to a policeman. All these shootings cannot be stress related.

  • Jack - 2012-05-21 13:14

"It was believed Phalane shot Mavunda before shooting himself." Dang, Sherlock, you clever.

      daryltt - 2012-05-21 15:31

Still a small possibility that Mavunda was hit by the stray bullet that Phalane shot himself with. A very small possibility...

  • Thembane.wa.Mahlaza - 2012-05-21 13:15

I gues they were probably working different shifts as they were both constable. so maybe infedelity played a huge part into this mess. let her REST IN PEACE not sure if the dude must RIP...?

  • Loo - 2012-05-21 13:18

Is it my imagination or is most murders in RSA committed by policemen killing their families/friends .... WHAT is it with these lot. And why is the most volatile of people allowed in the force... dont they do psyche screening ... or Am i too first world now ??

      Loo - 2012-05-21 13:19

Sorry for that grammar of mine .. its shocking.. I will do better next time :)

      UmshiniWami - 2012-05-21 13:26

Loo, Go to any SAPS station and try to get someone to take your statement. you are in for a big shock.

      Zenzile Tshanda - 2012-05-21 13:34

as long as you've got a driver's license, a matric certificate, and under 35 years old you in. shocking!!

      Msika - 2012-05-21 13:34

      Lool :)

      Boer - 2012-05-21 19:39

No screening just a buddy buddy system.

  • thapelo.monamodi - 2012-05-21 13:20

I would rather say- we dnt hv pepol who help crym or pepol who, whn we hd problems we cn go to thm...this thng of police who kill their partner is getting worse, i dnt undrstnd is becouse thy carry guns who myk them doing tht bd thngs..myb they should nt hv thm whn thy going home, the guns should b left at work!

      Msika - 2012-05-21 13:38

Another one of the "Costly Matriculants" I guess. Wow!!

      Jack - 2012-05-21 16:03

Ok, the 30% pass is working well, I see.

  • Msika - 2012-05-21 13:28

Another selfish, coward moron!! Why kill the girlfriend? Bheki Cele didn't mean it like that, IDIOT!!

  • UmshiniWami - 2012-05-21 13:42

Zensille, not even that. recently it was revealed that 35000 cops do not have driver's licences. so they either are allowed to drive illegally of have to hitchike to the crime scene....

  • Stille - 2012-05-21 14:09

I was surprised to read he actually hit something with the current state of SAPS and their ability to use firearms.....

  • kasper.mbayi2 - 2012-05-21 14:25

Oh my lord. I wonder what is a cause of this, people must learn to share their problems with some other people before they take these wrong decisions.

  • Phiza - 2012-05-21 15:28

This is very bad because i know Sipho the guy who shot himself,i can believe this really

  • Konapi - 2012-05-21 15:47

Mnxm...is there something wrong from their minds or what...?

  • karabo.poopedi - 2012-05-21 16:18

I am of the opinion that the crime fighting and nation protecting officials should undergo regular couselling delivered to them on a monthly basis.

  • Rob - 2012-05-21 18:23

About time tha SAPS 'properly' assess potential recruits before employing them and then give them the necessary training. A lot of the 'lower echelon' Police I have had dealings with are illeterate and should certainly not be in charge of a fire-arm.

  • chikunga - 2012-05-21 18:23

man are failing to live with the EQUAL RIGHTS.Your women can cheat like you. Many pretend to be the MODERN NAME bit less we forget besides the civilisation mask, they are still MAN. Mayb a pyschologist and education can work.MAN should just learn to cry themselves to sleep. YOUR women can get fu**ed by another man,get that into your thick skulls

  • Ntombifuthi - 2012-05-21 22:09

It's such a pity that precious life is wasted thru these immature actions. I just pray to God that He gives both berreaved families strength during this trying times. I just hope others learn from this and never take anyone's life as they do not give that life. Only God does.

  • rebecca.mabunda - 2012-05-23 08:43

To the Mabunda's may the Lord comfort us and give a forgiving heart. The loss of our sista, daughter, cousin, grand daughter is unbearable but the only thin that we know as a family n that kept us thru the past years is God. I pray that we be comfoted n heal. To the phalane family may the Lord wipe the shame off from your face. Heal you for the loss of your son n forgive him. To all their friends DON'T REPEAT THE SAME MISTAKE. We are shocked still n tears stream down our chicks the more we try n process this in our minds, was it worth taking her lyf? But we shall continue to hope in the Lord. May your soul Rest in peace sise Linda. To the saps??????
