Limpopo cop released on warning

Johannesburg - A police constable accused of helping a robber escape was released on a warning on Tuesday, Limpopo police said.

Warrant Officer Elias Beetha, 49, who was based at the Westenburg police station, appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court, said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

"He was facing charges related to defeating the ends of justice," he said. The case was postponed until 19 September.

He allegedly booked out Isaiah Masenya from police holding cells for an investigation on 28 July. Masenya faced charges of robbery, theft out of motor vehicle and of escaping from lawful custody.

Beetha reported that Masenya had escaped while under his guard and that his attempts to re-arrest Masenya had failed.

Masenya was re-arrested a week later and now faced an additional charge of escaping from lawful custody.

Beetha was arrested by the Hawks on Monday night and was detained at the Seshego police station.

Mulaudzi said internal disciplinary process against Beetha had started and he had been issued with a notice of intention to suspend him.
