Limpopo escapees arrested after jailbreak

2012-02-07 17:59
Johannesburg - Police re-arrested two of the six awaiting-trial prisoners who escaped from the Malipsdrift police cells at the weekend, Limpopo police said on Tuesday.

Lieutenant Colonell Mohale Ramatseba said the two were re-arrested in Atok on Monday.

He said one of the awaiting trial prisoners had been arrested for stock theft and the other for assault.

The six men escaped after they overpowered a police officer when they were being served meals at the police cells on Sunday.

They stole the officer's firearm but nobody was wounded in the escape.

The remaining four escapees were awaiting trial for crimes including murder, attempted murder, and robbery.

The re-arrested two were expected to appear at the Malipsdrift Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

A search continues for the other escapees.
