Marble Hall - Five suspects will appear in a Limpopo court in connection with the theft of medals valued at R5 000.
Joseph Mathibela, 62, Brian Mazarira, 62, Mkhokozile Ngwenya, 22, Madala Chipinda, 37, and Hardlife Chijeke, 23, first appeared in the Groblersdal Magistrate's Court on Monday.
"Five suspects were arrested at Toitskraal near Marble Hall on Friday night after they were caught red handed inside the farm's storeroom where the medals were kept," Marble Hall police spokesperson Constable Lethunya Mmuroa told African Eye News Service on Monday.
Mmuroa said farm workers spotted the suspects and alerted the farm owner, who then called police.
He said when the police interviewed the suspects, they confessed that they were going to sell the medals to a scrap metals company.
"Only Mathibela was released on R1 000 bail on Monday after the court heard he had been hired by the other four to transport them in his own vehicle,” Mmuroa said.
The other four will apply for bail on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, four other suspects will appear in the same court on Tuesday in connection with stealing mealies worth R2 500 at Toitskraal.
"The farm workers alerted the farm owner after they spotted a vehicle's lights in the field on Friday night.
"The owner called police who arrested the people and confiscated the mielies. A grey bakkie used during the crime was also impounded by police,” said Mmuroa.
He praised the farm workers for being alert and urged other communities to report criminal activities.
