Limpopo game lodge gutted by fire

2011-08-24 14:00
Polokwane - A game lodge was severely damaged by runaway veld fires in Thabazimbi, Limpopo's Working on Fire said on Wednesday.

"I received reports that eight chalets, part of the main lodge building and the owners house were burnt down in the fire yesterday [Tuesday] afternoon," said spokesperson Alywn Kruger.

He said between 50 and 60 thousand hectares of veld - mostly game farm land - had burnt between Rooiberg and Leeupoort.

The impact of the fires on wildlife in the area would take several days to assess, Kruger said.

While most of Tuesday's fires had either burnt themselves out or been extinguished, fires were still burning in some mountainous regions on Wednesday.

Two Working on Fire teams were dispatched to "back burn" at the base of the mountains to contain the blaze.

Kruger said the fire danger index - drawn from weather conditions conducive to the spread of fires - had been in the red alert range at 72 on Tuesday, but had fallen to orange alert at 61.

"With these conditions, indications are that the fire will probably be contained by late afternoon," he said.
