Polokwane - A Limpopo man has come up with a novel idea in the battle against HIV/Aids: he has promised a gold medal and a cash prize of R100 000 to South African women for remaining virgins.

Rabelani Ramali, the founder of SA Virgin Girls Awards, is hoping his idea will curb unwanted pregnancies and HIV/Aids, the Times reported on Wednesday.

Ramali has himself fathered five children by four women.

He has based the prize money on the age of the contestants with virgins between the ages of 31-35 being promised a cash prize of R100 000 and R25 000 for those aged between 21 and 25.

Ramali has asked 45 medical doctors to verify the virginity of the women contestants.

But both the Commission for Gender Equality and the department of women, children and people with disabilities have spoken against Ramali's mission saying it might be dangerous and is a violation of human rights.

But department of health said it supported any initiative useful in combating the spread of disease.
