Polokwane - Despite being given textbooks, both pupils and teachers in Limpopo say they are not looking forward to the next year of education as they will have to deal with pit toilets, “tree” schools and classrooms without roofs.

At one school, boys queued outside a concrete barrier surrounding two holes in the ground, reported Eyewitness News. This was their toilet.

Last year, a boy was bitten by a poisonous snake at one of the makeshift toilets.

Many of the classrooms are also without roofs following a thunderstorm last year. Teachers say that if it rains, they have to cancel classes.

Meanwhile, a Limpopo education department official confirmed that not all textbooks had in fact been delivered to all schools in the province.

Department spokesperson Phuti Seloba told The Star that an error occurred when ordering textbooks from publishers last year. But Seloba said it was just a few books “here and there” that had not been sent to schools.
