Johannesburg - A man accused of killing four soccer players when his bakkie crashed into their minibus taxi last year was granted bail by the Mankweng Magistrate's Court on Monday, Limpopo police said.

James Mahlodi, 36, was granted R2 000 bail and told to appear in court again on 22 February, Constable Moses Molepo said.

He was charged with murder, drunken driving and giving incorrect information to police following the accident in November last year. Mahlodi allegedly crashed into the side of the taxi transporting 25 members of the Polokwane City football club.

The taxi landed on its side, in the path of oncoming traffic, where a bus carrying Zion Christian Church members slammed into it.

Khomotso Mpaketsane, Mojalefa Mphuthi, Koketso Takalo and Benjamin Nthete were killed.

When Mahlodi was arrested he allegedly told police his name was Sammy Maepa.
