Limpopo students face murder charges

2012-05-07 13:05

Polokwane - About 100 students will be charged with murder and assault following an attack in which a man died at the University of Limpopo, police said on Monday.

The students assaulted a group of eight men accused of robbing a student of a cellphone on the Mankweng campus on Thursday, Constable Moses Molepo said.

However, investigations had revealed that the men were merely visitors.

"The men visited the campus during Thursday and not in the early hours of Wednesday, when the student was robbed."

Molepo said there was no evidence linking the men to the robbery.

"The student who was robbed was not able to identify any of the accused men."

The eight men were attacked with sticks, stones, and other weapons.

"Three of the men managed to escape while the five others were badly injured. One of the men died in hospital on Friday."

Molepo said the students also stoned the ambulance called to take the injured men to hospital, but did not hurt the medics. They broke a campus office window.

"At this stage police are trying to establish who the involved students were in order to charge them."

Molepo urge anyone with information about the attack to contact the police.

I thought versity was for matured people, but what they did was imature

      Mattewis - 2012-05-07 13:49

It's not really immature, just brutal & uncivilized! I know many immature people who are not violent at all. Varsity is supposed to be for hard-working civilized people!

      Peter-Peter - 2012-05-07 13:53

with the standards of schooling dropping, the lowering of pass rates to accommodate lower IQ'd people etc...this is just the start of it unfortunately. The people who were proud to be in these universities, are gone. The flood gates for the people with no self respect, and respect for others has opened. "So long and thanks for all the fish"

@ Rob. Your comment on the original article “Students attack robber s in Limpopo” Rob- May 3, 2012 at 17:38 Report comment Well done 'boys and girls'.. Don't put up with this scum. If the Police did their duty, we would not have to resort to 'mob justice'. Hopefully a message to those 'arsewipe criminals' out there. The general public have had enough of crime and are starting, eventually to 'react'. Keep it up. Hypocrite

      Rob - 2012-05-07 17:31

Trudy.....IF you had bothered to check that " Rob " correctly, you would have discovered that it was in fact the OTHER Rob, who happens to be Rob Tubbs..........Ja my girl, check the facts first. You are always too quick to pass comment on my comments. Idiot !

  • Themba Troublemaker Mathenjwa - 2012-05-07 13:22

This is what we call \massive miscariage of justice\ at its best. When the students are victimised, there is nothing wrong but if they impose 'private defence' in their massive little power to their attackers they are wrong. I am very happy because the very same Mankweng Police Services which today is investigating student to be arrested

      ShottaZee - 2012-05-07 13:45

Themba an innocent person died here. It could have been you visiting your girlfriend there.

      Themba Troublemaker Mathenjwa - 2012-05-07 14:11

ShottaZee, we are talking about learned

      Sean - 2012-05-07 14:40

Errm , Themba , the men were innocent !! Wtf are you trying to justify ?? Goes to show how primitive some people still are !

  • Bear - 2012-05-07 13:27

Limpopo.... ai... does it not feel as if South Africa is a bunch of countries stuck together in terms of provinces? Marauding Mongolians in some parts, relaxed laid back Jamaicans in other parts and whatever lies in between in the rest?

  • Ted - 2012-05-07 13:29

If the police are waiting for people to come forward, how did the journalist know 'about' 100 will be charged? I am feeling the sensation!

      Gallant LeVogue - 2012-05-07 13:38

      Journalist can be creative!

  • Lusanda - 2012-05-07 13:41

    charge them: murder is murder

  • Thoka - 2012-05-07 13:41

they are sick and tired. Varsity management is not doing anything to help them. this could have been avoided. A friend has been complaining for sometime about lack or no security measures in place and at least student get mugged everyday by heartless look alike student in the campus.

      Jacqui - 2012-05-07 14:01

Thoka, look alike people?. Geez some in your community go to extraordinary lengths to be criminal don't they?

  • Ally - 2012-05-07 13:43

Today there are few less robbers to terrorise the people of Limpopo and SA. Yipppee! So yes, we really do condone murder in a case like this -- it seems to be the only thing that lawless people ultimately understand. Let the students walk free.

      Dave - 2012-05-07 13:53

THE MEN WHERE INOCENT --- SO WHAT DOES THAT MAKE THE STUDENTS,-- A MOD.

      Mike - 2012-05-07 14:02

Ally did you even read the article??

      Jacqui - 2012-05-07 14:02

O.K. for students to murder then?. I never knew that was part of a study curriculum.

  • Buzz - 2012-05-07 13:45

COMES AFTER CORRUPTION AND THE LAW,

      Buzz - 2012-05-07 16:40

But before tender rigging and secret bank accounts

  • Schmee - 2012-05-07 13:45

I wonder if people like this have a conscience. Are the students going realise what they did was wrong or are they just going to be defensive and blame the eight men anyway.

      Olivia - 2012-05-07 14:06

Eight men visiting a campus as a group. Who were they visting?

      mandla.shikwambana - 2012-05-07 14:21

      Schmee - 2012-05-07 14:34

There we have it. Two excuses already.

      Sharon - 2012-05-07 19:22

the anc has been in power for 19 years and these idiots know about the corruption and theft yet they still vote them back into power so why would they worry about killing a few visitors to the campus,it must be their culture and upbringing that has been passed down from the so called ancestors(you know?the ones that will punish them for voting for a different party) - as per the zoomer

  • Successful Nhlamulo Mabilane - 2012-05-07 13:45

eish hope by attacking the visitors they had enough evidence which police cant take it police are irresponsible people they like the word investigation even things are obvious who ever come with this useless laws themselves are thugs

  • Tony Lapson - 2012-05-07 13:51

In most countries, you apprehend the criminal and let justice take its course in court. In Africa, you beat a person down, yell and celebrate at what you have just done, and then stomp on his head until he is dead... Then find out that he could've been innocent. No remorse of course.

  • Jacqui - 2012-05-07 13:58

The law of the jungle and that on a university campus. Brainy people there, or not?.

  • Refiloe - 2012-05-07 14:05

    oooops! wrong men

  • Loo - 2012-05-07 14:17

Good luck charging a 100 people with murder nogal, we cant even seem to get a single conviction these days. Cops better watch SCI on TV ,, theyre gonna be busy .. * chuckle

      Peter-Peter - 2012-05-07 14:37

out of 100, they will at least get 1 conviction...and then report to the media that it must be taken as a warning for future 'mob justice murderers'. They will find a way to make it look like they have done a good job... BTW: All of that IF only 1 conviction lol otherwise a premature 'well done' from me

  • ntunjab - 2012-05-07 14:19

Last week young student from dis varsity was robbed n stabbed to death, so I dnt blame students dat much, they are feeling inferiour in their own territory.... School manegemnt doesn't give them the best security at school. My POV

  • Flynn - 2012-05-07 14:34

I am confused with this article - the story starts by stating that "about 100 students will be charged" and towards the end of the same article it states that "At this stage police are trying to find who the involved ......" Police don't know who to charge but they made a statement - shame on SAPS

  • Gaby - 2012-05-07 14:39

We should be grateful the students didn't eat them.

      Loo - 2012-05-07 15:08

Bwahahahahaha .. made my day there .. hehhe

  • Dylan - 2012-05-07 14:50

    eish...

  • nomzamo.kongola - 2012-05-07 14:57

i am a student, nd i have been mugged, its tru dat security in varsity is not on par wen it cums to crime prevention, but murder, assualt and damage to property is no answer these are also crimes, killing an inocent man is crime, even if the men were guilty its still murder. I will neva condone or endorse such behaviour this aint a jungle there are laws in this country...n ya i hope they find these students which they will n charge the whole mob wit murder under the doctrine of common purpose the whole lot of them such behavior can neva be justified and acceptable!

      lucky.mlambo2 - 2012-05-07 15:46

Sori are u sure of what u are sayin about those student who tried to do a right thing for themselves, coz u law doesnt act on thast case of killin and rapin of ur mates are the unversity, wow shame on u coz ur day will turn and there is goin to be nobody who is goin to fight for u,,how is that!

      lucky.mlambo2 - 2012-05-07 15:46

      nomzamo.kongola - 2012-05-07 17:57

i know my day will cum, n so will urz n everyone else, but i will neva endorse murder nd mob justice, lets not defend such behaviour a crime is a crime, murder is murder and its as simple as dat, SA aint a jungle where dog eats dog, the solution to dealing with crime is not murder it can neva be hence the death penalty is not part of the law. Ppl shud just let the law take its course n not take matters into their own hands. Nd shud these students be found they will be charged wit murder n they will be convicted! Dats just the law, the intentional killing of anada human being is murder, and aint no getting around even if the men were there to rob the students the students will go down for murder dat is the law!

Absence of evidence is nt evidence of innocence

      Tony Lapson - 2012-05-07 15:35

      Therefor murder is completely justified!

      mmahlatji - 2012-05-07 15:45

Murder cn never be justified, jus sayin that wat the judiciary requires as evidence is too much, hence a rape case cn be decided on \my word against your\

  • Thembelihle - 2012-05-07 15:37

Students are raped and killed at this university, ask urself what 8 men in a group were doing at 2 AM and hw students got outta bed to without any reason attack them. R the police telling u the whole truth?

if the cops r failn 2 do their dusk, then, those who r affectd(studnts) must take action.

  • tshivhombelaf - 2012-05-07 16:26

Students are groomed to be professionals not law enforcement agencies. In the universities there are many idle minds and opportunists who would always find something to keep them busy. If the victim was found with evidence, the students must face the full might of the law.

      tshivhombelaf - 2012-05-07 20:12

      Without, I mean.

  • tshepo.ally - 2012-05-07 17:05

let us be impartial on this issue. yes, the students did not have the liberty to carry out such an act. they took the law into their own hands. they did not identify the men before attacking them. it was wrong and they should be charged. however, let us look at one thing here. there have been many attacks on students at the University of Limpopo, on and off campus. the police have not done much to curb the crime. seven girls were sexually assualted in one night. a student was killed two weeks back. crime is rife around the campus and students are always vulnerable. those students were just looking out for themselves. what they did was wrong, but let us consider their reasons and grievances. the very same people who are contemplating indictment upon them should start putting measures into place to protect students and avoid such inhumane behaviour in the future. that's my view.

  • khulu.marholeni - 2012-05-07 17:57

we r not apologetic, they can charge our students and we will bail them out

      nomzamo.kongola - 2012-05-08 08:04

wow u dnt knw hw the law works do u? Just becoz u bail a person out duznt mean they r innocent n will not face the charges against them, bail is a pre-trial motion, which determines whether a person will go to jail pending their trial or will be releases on bail but wen the trial cumz followed by the conviction they will go to prison n serve their sentence....
