Cape Town – The death of Ndoda Ngemntu during a shooting at a tavern in Nyanga has sent shock waves through the community, the ANC Youth League in the province said on Monday.

Ngemntu, 39, was a former spokesperson for the league.

Following the local ANC branch leader's murder on Saturday evening, the league said it would renew its resolve to fight crime and expose "thugs, hooligans... [and] criminals".

"We shall fight relentlessly in quest of ensuring our communities remain safe and out of the clutches of crime."

The provincial ANC said it was shocked by his death.

Ngemntu had been part of its delegation to the recent National General Council.

"His branch trusted him with many tasks, his region had confidence in his leadership and the province, many a time, called on him to take various responsibilities, fully aware of his capacity and his courage", the party said.

Ngemntu was one of three men shot and killed while at a tavern to watch the Springboks play the All Blacks on Saturday.

The men were shot dead in Cubungu Street, KTC, around 17:00, said Western Cape police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana.

While police said four men were wounded, local ward councillor, Khaya Yozi, put the figure at five.

He said most were shot in the arm or leg but one man was critically wounded and taken to Groote Schuur hospital.

"There is a strong suspicion in the community that gang violence is involved."

Rwexana said no arrests had been made.
