THREE promising young Pietermaritzburg designers have booked their places among 10 who will showcase their works in the final of the Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award presented by Durban Fashion Fair.

With this year’s theme of “Captain’s Table”, 25 designs inspired by everything from cruise liners to colourful ocean life were scrutinised by a panel of judges consisting of Greg Wallis, Kathrin Kidger, Zama Mathe, Monica Holman and Sindi Shangase.

At the end of the show the names of the 10 aspiring KwaZulu-Natal fashion students who had made it through to the next round of the popular design competition were announced.

Brunhilda Fomunyuy, Athenkosi Mfungula and Martin John Steenkamp all from the School of Fashion Pietermaritzburg, were all announced as finalists.

Durban University of Technology provided six of the 10 finalists and one is from Inscape. Each of the finalists won R2 000 from Gold Circle.

The eventual winner of the Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award will win a trip to the New York Fashion Week, travelling business class on Delta Airlines, R10 000 in cash from Gold Circle and Schweppes, a smartphone from Vodacom and a host of other prizes, with the second- and third-placed students getting R3 000 and R2 000 respectively.

Designer Kidger explained how the judges’ decision balanced innovation, originality, the interpretation of the “Captain’s Table” fashion theme and if the outfits were raceday appropriate.

“Despite our different aesthetics as judges we were all on the same page for the top 10 and certainly the top five.”

Shangase from Durban Fashion Fair lauded the judges’ dedication to delving into the depths of the designers’ garment inspiration. “The entrants that went through were able to successfully translate their storyboard into their final design.”

Anticipation is steadily mounting for Vodacom Durban July on July 4 whenThe winner of the Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award competition will be announced on the Action Stage at the Vodacom Durban July on July 4.
