Lotto scammers caught in Kempton Park

2012-08-01 22:17

Johannesburg - Two men were arrested in Kempton Park on Wednesday for allegedly defrauding a woman in a lottery scam, the Hawks said.

A relative of the victim alerted police, spokesperson Colonel McIntosh Polela said.

The 61-year-old Eastern Cape woman went to Johannesburg to meet people who told her she had won R57.4m in the UK lottery.

"The pensioner apparently refused to believe members of her family who told her that this was a scam," Polela said.

A Hawks team went to the hotel where the meeting was to take place.

On her arrival at the hotel, the woman was told by a so-called lottery official to pay R57 000 to him so he could negotiate a tax discount on her winnings.

Before her departure from Mthatha, the woman had already paid R8 350 into a bank account, purportedly fees required for her to claim her winnings.

In the Johannesburg hotel room the woman and her daughter, who accompanied her, were shown stacks of "cash" in a portable safe.

"In fact, these were papers neatly covered with R100 notes on each side to look like real cash," Polela said.

One man was arrested in the room, and his accomplice at reception. Both were foreign nationals.

They would appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on Friday on fraud charges.

These group of Nigerians are just heartless ,how do you scam a 60 year Old.These men must be deported to Nigeria to serve their jail term in Kirir Kiri prison because SA prisons are like hotels.I have written to the saps several times to hire Nigerian consultants to deal with Nigerian criminals but have received no reply from them.I am willing to render my services to the hawks.I know most of these tricks and i help destroy all these syndicates. This is how the FBI deals with Nigerians criminals, they hire Nigerian consultants and use them to track down these criminals and get them caught.I am appealing to the hawks, please note that no matter how good you are the Nigerians criminals will always be a step ahead. The best way to get good result is to use good Nigerians to infiltrate these syndicates and detroy them from within. As i emntioned earlier i am willing to assist the SAPS as a consultant and maybe even as an undrecover agent.I know most of these tricks and i can easily infiltrate these syndicate and identify the master minds.

      xboxs.guru - 2012-08-02 11:45

Where are all the Nigerian associations ,what are you Nigerian cultural leaders doing about this? Why are you quiet or are you taking kickbacks.I am one Nigerian who is ready to do something to uphold my national pride.PLEASE LET US DO SOMETHING,THIS IS GETTING TOO MUCH TO BEAR.Saps and Hawks please heed my advice : swallow your pride ,hire and train Nigerians to work for you.

They say its random selection of cell phone numbers while others target landline numbers so poor people part with the little they have hoping to access their winnings. I forfeited my genuine winning from another company because they requested my bank details.

Why most of Nigerian nationals that are in SA are always involved in criminal elements?

      stanton.clarke - 2012-08-01 23:45

I ask the same question time and again. The baddies outweigh the good ones by a mile.

      xboxs.guru - 2012-08-02 11:48

@phillipm.seopa - It is because they are not screened properly before they are issued visas. You should see the SA embassy officials in Lagos how corrupt they are. They even issue visas to criminals who are wanted in Nigeria. Can you believe that?I am a Nigerian myself but i am always shocked when i see the caliber of Nigerians that have overrun SA in such a short space of time.

  • Kagiso Spat Truthtell - 2012-08-01 23:33

Thats all Nigerians bring to SA...fraud, brothels, drugs eish these ppl must go bk to their country. We should be like Australia, anybody who comes here must explain exactly wat they are gonna do and how long will they stay and their records checked. If they dont have any skills, or any intention to study they must not enter this country.

      xboxs.guru - 2012-08-02 11:52

@Kagiso Spat Truthtell - Don't let these make you hate Nigerian ,we are not all bad.Bad people exist everywhere ,it is just unfortunate that there are quite a lot of Nigerian criminals in SA.e have to tackle this together. The Saps must befriend the Nigerian community and use members of our community to expose the bad eggs amongst us.The SA Embassies in Nigeria should be reviewed ,the officials there are too stinking corrupt hence why a lot of useless Nigerians get a easy pass to SA.

The Republic of South Africa is a playgroung for all types of criminals from Foreign countries,it is all because of the system that our government uses.Do you think these criminals would try their luck in Qatar,UAE(Arab countries). In those countries you don't get away with anything. If our country was strict enough,we wouldn't experiencing all these type of things, but what can we do.Our government is doing nothing with the crime, all the government does,is to put more money in their pockets, klaar.I just hate the way this contry is governed.

  • philani.sidinile - 2012-08-02 04:23

We can blame the Nigerians all we want, but as a country we have brought this to ourselves. e.g the number of ladies (south african) that give Citizenshipery to these people by marrying them, the drugs we buy from them (mind you: they don't use them) I'm telling you before we know it there will be a political party for foreigners because even our government is too leniant. When that happens there will be no turning back. Human trafficicking will be legal, drug selling will be done over the counter, prostitution legal, etc.

      marleze.baartman - 2012-08-02 07:05

Goverment should let the soldiers gaurd the borderpost, so that they can stop these people from entering our country illegally. But they won't cause they don't want to pay them.

      marleze.baartman - 2012-08-02 07:00

      rude.awakning - 2012-08-02 13:58

charles. The point is not that i said you live on a farm... ! If you live in a reasonably built up area or a CBD you would have been exposed to reputable honest business people of diverse culture, colour and creed that would sell you a qaulity product that is not fake! Note the emphasis on 'Diverse' which is the point i am making! I have travelled quite a bit ... Currently in Colorado US, met many a traders the world over and cannot come to a conclusion which 'race' is the most trustworthy! Instead of stereo typing race i prefer to choose a worthy trader with credentials, fixed business address, legit products and offer a warranty of sort! Now that makes for a good place to buy from!

its typical of South African to hate other African brothers especially Nigerians, why? i really dont know.. just one criminal case and its all Nigerians, the idea of generalising is not only childish but a sence of prejudice that as been instilled in most of the South Africans, just imagine there as hardly been any adult that as not been a victim of crime , whether its a mere cellphone or just a pick pocket, nobody labels south Africans as all criminals.not to defend the criminals just to let you know crime as no nationality.. the last drug burst in the news of upto 100million was south africans, have you watched carte blanche lately? who are the scammers there ? Judge for yourself. Prejudice brings no progress...

      xboxs.guru - 2012-08-02 12:05

@timmy.khethani - Sorry to burst your bubble but 18 South Africans were arrested in Nigeria in 2012 so far for crimes ranging from rape, Money laundering, fraud and assault.I can give you the case numbers and telephone numbers you can call to verify these details.I do not support criminals ,i don't care if you are my brother ,wife or close friend. In the united states a lot of foreign criminals operate ther ,the Chinese, the Russians ,the Mexicans, the columbians e.tc. but the Americans are not xenophobic towards those people. You are a staunch xenophobe who use Nigerian crime and excuse to hate Nigerians. You are not really concerned about crimes you just hate Nigerians.Be a man and admit it instead of trying to deceive us.
