Cape Town - Hammer murder accused Fred van der Vyver is not going to testify in his own defence, the Cape High Court was told on Monday.
"My decision is not to call the accused," his advocate Dup de Bruyn told the court at the start of the defence case.
He said that instead he would go ahead with testimony from expert witnesses for the defence.
Van der Vyver is charged with the 2005 murder of his girlfriend, University of Stellenbosch masters student, Inge Lotz.
She was found bludgeoned to death in her flat on the outskirts of the town.
The first witness called by De Bruyn on Monday was an American fingerprint expert, Pat Wertheim.
Wertheim told the court he had made a detailed study of cases in which police fabricated fingerprints in order to get convictions.
