Low traffic volume on major roads

Johannesburg - Traffic volumes on major national roads were low on Sunday morning, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said.

Spokesperson Ashref Ismail said this indicated that most people have reach their destination.

"High volumes are expected tomorrow [Monday] when some will return home or [are] going out," he said.

He said that although motorists seemed to obey traffic rules on national roads, the majority of drivers on secondary roads were not obeying traffic rules.

"Most of accident occurred on secondary roads; people are under the impression that law enforcement is only on national roads," he said, adding that the rules apply to all equally regardless of where they drive. "In cities, the most common incident [is] drunken driving."

He said another worrying problem was minibus taxi drivers who drove at high speeds and made dangerous turns and overtook when it was not safe to do so.
