Lucky escape as plane crashes onto car

2011-12-14 21:05

Pretoria - Two men died and three others were slightly injured on Wednesday night after a small plane crash landed on the R55 near Centurion.

The plane is believed to have been from the training school nearby.

ER's Vanessa Jackson said when paramedics arrived, the small aircraft was in pieces and the plane had also crashed into a car that had been travelling on the road at the time.

The two men who had been in the plane were declared dead at the scene.

The men in the car suffered only minor injuries, she said.

"After thorough assessment by paramedics, they decided that they'd leave the scene with private transport and would see further medical attention at a later stage if it was necessary."

She said the Centurion-bound lane would remain closed while investigations were underway.

Any idea what aircraft it was and which flying school is involved? Been in aviation for almost 20yrs now and it is actually a very close community. Always sad when people lose their life in an incident like this. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those who lost their lives.

Not so lucky for the two in the plane.... Headline is a bit inappropriate..

  • Warmonger - 2011-12-15 07:09

Uhhmmmm, "Lucky" escape... for the pilots..? Sometimes media sensationalism hits a brick wall. Sad

There are people who lost their lives in this accident but you see it fit to headline the story "Lucky escape..."

  • Dallace - 2011-12-15 11:43

Interesting to note that this post was deleted from your Facebook page after complaints about the insensitivity of the headline, yet no comment or apology was forthcoming from News24. An apology to the deceaseds' families IS in order News24!!!!! MTDSRIP and sincerest condolences to the families who lost loved ones in this tragic accident!

  • Monika - 2011-12-15 12:07

What, exactly, is lucky about two people dying? If the title was aimed at the pilot that escaped alive, I feel it's quite insensitive to the families of the people that have passed away due to this terrible tragedy>

  • nicola.steynberg - 2011-12-15 12:33

I really don't get how this is a "Lucky Escape?"

      Mannie777 - 2011-12-15 13:24

For the people in the car obviously, but yes i agree, wrong headline indeed.

  • Mthethwa - 2011-12-15 12:39

For those who might be wondering, the Pilot's name was Gerhard Scheepers, he went to Ligbron Technical High School. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and close friends!

  • Adrian - 2011-12-15 14:38

In most countries a lucky escape implies that no-one was killed ...
