McBride described as 'mad man'

Pretoria - Former Ekurhuleni metro police chief Robert McBride is a "mad man" who is capable of anything, the Pretoria Magistrate's Court heard on Wednesday.

McBride's ex-colleague Patrick Johnson who had since turned State witness, told the court that McBride had forced him to sign an initial statement which indicated that he was not drunk when he crashed his state-owned vehicle in December 2006.

"He is mad," Johnson told the court.

"He is capable of anything."

Johnson was testifying in the trial of general practitioner Joseph Moratioa who treated McBride shortly after the car crash on the R511 near Hartbeespoort Dam.

Moratioa, from Mamelodi, was facing fraud charges after allegedly issuing a fraudulent medical certificate stating that Robert McBride was not drunk at the time of his car crash.

Johnson had since maintained that he had no choice but to sign the initial statement following threats from McBride that he would rape his wife and harm his family.
