Mbombela - Mpumalanga's hospitality facilities need tighter security to make tourists feel safe, says community safety, security and liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe.

Shongwe was speaking after three armed men held up 108 pupils and 10 teachers from Centurion's Laerskool Hennopspark at the Aan de Vliet resort in Hazyview. The incident happened just after midnight on Thursday.

"Security measures need to be strengthened all around the province’s lodges, hotels and resorts, otherwise the province’s economy will suffer," said Shongwe.

"Although I believe that the incident may have been a freak accident, I am appealing to lodge owners to work closely with the police and other security agencies in order to ensure that such heinous acts are not repeated elsewhere in this province."

Shongwe also urged police to make a speedy arrest.

"I’m also calling on the police to ensure that perpetrators are urgently brought to book as the incident has a potential to dent tourism in the province."

He also asked members of the public to forward any relevant information about the case to the police. They can contact Captain Albert Manzini on 082 449 0231.

Meanwhile, police are also searching for four suspects who shot dead prominent timber farmer Paul Mason, 63, at Kruisfontein farm in Sabie on Thursday morning.

He and his and his wife, Gwyneth Mason, 58, were accosted by four armed men and robbed of cash, jewellery, four cellphones and laptops.

Their elderly gardener was thrown into a pit toilet.

Anyone with information can contact Captain Hanyani Moshwani on 082 448 9480.
