Johannesburg - A man seriously injured in an accident on Amajuba pass between Volksrust and Newcastle received assistance from KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo, KwaZulu-Natal emergency services said on Sunday.

The man was in a truck, carrying granite slabs, which reportedly left the road and went down an embankment on Saturday afternoon, spokesperson Desmond Motha said.

Dhlomo, travelling from Nelspruit in Mpumalanga, stopped to assist the man, using primary response medical equipment he had in his car.

"He treated the patient, who was the only occupant of the truck for the serious injuries that he sustained during the accident, while paramedics and local emergency services responded to the scene," said Motha.

"When paramedics from KwaZulu-Natal emergency medical services arrived on scene, he continued to treat the patient and helped the paramedics carry the patient up an embankment and... into the ambulance."

The man was stabilised in the ambulance then taken to hospital for additional treatment.

*Dhlomo was in the news in February 2013, for commandeering a helicopter to attend a funeral in the town of Hlabisa.

His actions meant the helicopter was not available to take a critically injured teenager to hospital.
