Johannesburg - Several MECs for education have threatened to charge principals of schools that performed dismally in last year’s matric exams.

The Sunday Times reported that Limpopo’s education MEC Dikeledi Magadzi said she would push for the dismissal of principals of schools that achieved a pass rate of 25% and less.

She said demotions and dismissals are something that should be considered, especially as principals should regard themselves as chief executives of companies.

Mpumalanga education MEC Reginah Mhaule also vowed to take action. She said principals from underperforming schools would be charged with underperformance. According to her, schools in her province that received a pass rate of less than 50% would be classified as dysfunctional.

This comes ahead of matric results which are expected to be released on Tuesday.
