Johannesburg - Nic Dawes will be the new editor-in-chief of the Mail & Guardian following the resignation of Ferial Haffajee, the weekly newspaper said on Thursday.
Dawes will assume the role from June 1 when Haffajee leaves to take up the position of editor-in-chief of City Press.
Dawes will be responsible for the company's print and multimedia products, including the Mail & Guardian weekly and Mail & Guardian online.
He will be supported by Rapule Tabane, who has been appointed deputy editor-in-chief, the paper said in a statement.
Dawes joined Mail & Guardian in 2004 as an investigative and political reporter with editing duties at the Cape Town bureau. He was previously with This Day newspaper.
"He was part of the team that broke the story linking police chief Jackie Selebi to the underworld networks surrounding Brett Kebble, and has also contributed extensive news and analysis on politics and economic policy," the statement read.
Rapule joined the Mail & Guardian as senior political correspondent six years ago from Independent Newspapers.
Dawes said that editing the Mail & Guardian was an awesome responsibility.
The newspaper announced the resignation of Haffajee on Monday.
