MXit child porn 'horrific'

2011-08-14 21:30

Johannesburg - Child pornography pictures confiscated when the Hawks swooped on the suspected leader of a child porn ring which spread its material on MXit, have been described as "horrific".

The suspect, an ex-policeman, was arrested on Thursday while trying to leave the country.

The 38-year-old man would appear in court on Monday, according to Rapport newspaper.

Visibly shaken when describing the content, a source told the newspaper he couldn't believe his eyes.

"It was a barrage of pictures of young girls aged between five and 10, some older. They were very, very explicitly shown," he says.

“Some were dressed up in costumes and made to stand in specific positions. One posed with a sword and armour, naked.

"One was of a girl of about five, wearing a white dress and lying on a bed, looking terrified. Her genital area was exposed. That picture was labelled 'The Wedding'.

"Horrendous,” he said.

Took pictures himself

The source, who asked that his name be withheld, said all the pictures had labels and the suspect claimed he had taken the pictures himself.

"I shudder to believe it. There were pictures of at least 20 different girls."

Hawks spokesperson McIntosh Polela said the court case would be a logistical nightmare because the suspect operated in at least three provinces.

The suspect was currently in custody in Durban, where investigators took him on Friday to search one of his properties.

The case is likely to be heard there [in Durban], he said.

Tough stance

MXit, a free online mobile instant messenger and social network, said it had taken a tough stance on cyber crime by adopting some of the most stringent social networking security guidelines available.

The company was working with police to apprehend those who abused its platform and offered officers social media training.

MXit also co-operated with the police’s cyber-crimes unit.

was it necessary to describe ? really? you thought it be best? really?

      Centronix - 2011-08-14 23:08

don't be an idiot. Articles shouldn't be sugar coated. This is real journalism. Buy the 'You' magazine if this is too strong for you

      DubulaAMABUNU - 2011-08-15 06:09

      @Centronix, you forgot Huisgenoot, lol

      magszinovich - 2011-08-15 07:46

@Centronix Morrissey has a point. The news should be complacent but not to a point where they need to describe imagery in explicit detail. We all know what goes on in the world, but we don't need to be reminded of it every 5 minutes.

      Susannomore - 2011-08-15 07:51

Yes, I believe it is. We have to know how bad things are getting out there, in order to take a stand and stop them! I agree 100% with Centronix, don't sugarcoat. Let the journos report the truth and allow us to get angry.

      Susannomore - 2011-08-15 07:56

If anyone who read this is actually visualising the scenes in their heads, I think you need to seek help. Personaly, when reading this article, the image started creeping in and my mind immediatly shut it off. To sick to try and visualise, even with help.

      WhiteMalema - 2011-08-15 08:27

I agree with Centronix. News should not be sugar-coated. This monster does not deserve to breathe the same air that we do. @ magszinovich....I hope this "vivid" description has not awoken your imagination to the point of thinking sick thoughts. Follow Susannomore’s advice and seek help. Aren’t you perhaps related to that Polish guy who locked up his daughter in a cellar for 22 years?

      Xinobia - 2011-08-15 09:54

Morrissey & magszinovich - If you don't want to know it, why read it? Nobody's forcing you.

      aWake - 2011-08-15 10:09

Yes, please sugar coat it. So people can feel sorry for the bastard. Wake up!!

      Ettione Ferreira - 2011-08-15 10:48

I know you probably only said that because you feel disgusted by the image you got from it and I know what you mean, but the other commentators are also right, journalists have to make it a bit gruesome to get people to really understand the situation. I am a journalist and its sometimes hard to decide what to add and what to keep from the public, but sometimes its neccesary to give the good, the bad but also the ugly. Imagine how the people who saw the pics felt (the sane people) if we only feel this disgusted from hearing about it. I just hope those children get some psychological treatment after that sadists actions.

      TheWasp - 2011-08-15 11:03

It's well known that Child Porn offenders and Peodophiles go through hell in prison, if they stay alive long enough, it's seen as the ultimate low by inmates and punishment is dealt out severly by them.. Believe me - Justice here will be served and hope he lives a nightmare every day he is incarcerated...sick scumbag!

      winter123 - 2011-08-15 12:17

@ Morrissey: then don't read the friggin' news! If you want positive news, this is def not the place for you... These girls are living the nightmare you cannot comprehend or 'handle'! As horrific as it is, we as public are entitled to information and I would also love for this freak to be identified! Why not name him? Why should he be protected???

      schmerz - 2011-08-15 12:32

@Susannomore, don't think of a black cat oh sorry, did you think of a black cat?

      Giovani269@24.com - 2011-08-16 09:31

Yes, don't sugarcoat it. The truth is always ugly. People need to know what this sick bastara did. And some say innocent until proven guilty?? With pictures like that you are as guilty as hell itself… He should rot in a prison where they will dress him like a pretty girl…..

  • OZNOB - 2011-08-14 22:12

    SICK SICK SICK

      Susannomore - 2011-08-15 07:57

My concern is whether they are going to try and track down these kids to help them. They must be traumatised beyond believe, and maybe some (or all) have not told someone in authority that can help them start the process of healing.

      Netherlands - 2011-08-15 08:01

How did this TUB OF MONKEY SH!T, think he will get away with this????? Your brain has to be MUSHY to think like this BARBARIAN!!!!!!!!! Cut his SCHLONG OFF.... cut his ears off too and TATTOO the CRIME on his FOREHEAD!!!!!!!!

      Michael - 2011-08-15 10:12

Has anyone asked as to WHY people resort to such SICK SH*T? I think it might be liberal thinking and west influence. What do you people think?

  • GT - 2011-08-14 22:19

this illness cannot be fixed. They should be drowned in a mine shaft.

      umlaut - 2011-08-15 06:58

@GT-))-And he is an x policeman. Maybe there is more policeman involved. In this morning's news reports a well doer woman was arrested in Van der Bijl Park for REPORTING child abuse and that the kid was used as a sex slave. (probably by policeman also).ONLY IN SA CAN SOMETHING LIKE THAT HAPPEN. The only conclusion one can reach is that she SPOILED the fun of the police and she was arrested to take revenge. It has happened before that when a burglar was caught and taken to a police station to be charged that the people who took him there got arrested instead for doing that, (they happen to be white catching a black burglar), but that where child abuse is concerned, for arresting the woman trying to help?? It shows how SICK our society has become.

      Gewete - 2011-08-15 08:27

umlaut, what do you mean by "ONLY IN SA CAN SOMETHING LIKE THAT HAPPEN."? Trying to bring race and the NSA into it? The person arrested is an Ex-policeman thus in all probability a white person. Remember child pornography is usually a "white crime". And I agree with GT, except that I would choose a sewerage farm instead of a mineshaft.

      daaivark - 2011-08-15 09:57

Unlaut, you are either incredibly naive or you just will twisy anything to fit your skewed picture of South Africa. This sort of mass-media/social network digital porn is a highly developed industry in Europe, the US, Asia.... basically everywhere. A global blight. Not everything is a racial issue except in your warped mind.

      umlaut - 2011-08-15 10:05

Gewete---No it can happen only here that people get arrested for trying to do the right thing--she wanted to report it--the sex crimes can happen anywhere.

      Gewete - 2011-08-15 11:12

umlaut, I am sorry but I agree with Daaivark, you attempted to twist the issue to fit you skewed picture of South Africa.

      HarryO - 2011-08-15 11:55

@Umlaut & Gwede ... WTF do people always have to bring race into the argument when a crime like this is committed, it is a human "sickness" which is al over the world, it is just not reported in the underdeveloped countries, please see all my comments of yesterday to @mtsokwane on the original article http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/Hawks-bust-MXit-porn-boss-20110814

      umlaut - 2011-08-15 14:12

harry-o, gewete , daaivark--to say it again it can only happen in SA that somebody trying to help or to do the right thing can get arrested for that--the global blight of sex/mixit happens all over the world and is not a racist thing.... ARRESTING people for doing the right thing will only happen in a place like SA with its current RACIAL SICKNESS that people will get arrested for trying to report child abuse crimes or to have a burglar charged. The lady from Van der Bijl has suffered tremendous stress and she has gone through a sickening ordeal to do the right thing to get an abused young girl's case reported. The crime syndicate in the corrupt police arrested her to punish her for helping this young girl and they are making her life HELL in the name of the 'law' and they are charging her with anything they can find. this can only happen in a place like South Africa----- sex and mixit happens allllll over the world and has nothing to do with race. The 2 cases mentioned has everything to do with race and that can only happen in SA.

  • Morrissey - 2011-08-14 22:21

Why not work for The Sun rather or better yet stop reporting altogether . " horrific' child porn when is child porn not horrific ? what is wrong with you?

      Jenna - 2011-08-14 23:14

Morissy, not that I am comparing animals with humans, BUT some people need to see pictures of baby seals being clubbed to realize the absolute inhumanity. I hope this was the intention of the writer – apart from that I do agree with you.

      Jenna - 2011-08-14 23:22

Don't read the Afrikaans version - "The bride" (Die Bruid) gives a new meaning to disturbing.

      Howzitekse - 2011-08-15 07:27

They show pictures and vids of seals being clubbed, and it changes nothing. The world has gone soft on crime, and globaly the leaders do not have the moral conviction to act decisively against crime.

  • jevoixtout - 2011-08-14 23:05

The media should report it as it is. Secondly, hand this character over to me. When I am done with him the media can give a full report on what is left of him, pictures and all.

  • Lizelle - 2011-08-14 23:08

This is beyond shocking!!!!!! 5 year old girls must still play in the sand play princess princess believe in fairies, the Easter bunny and father x mas, 10 year old girls must still play dolls and believe that the world is a pure place that no harm gets done in the world'!!!!! This is sick and I hope this person burns in he'll!!!!!

      Angela - 2011-08-15 02:35

You think this is shocking? Did you not see the recent arrests for the crime child porn ring where they gained status by creating and posting their own porn videos of raping toddlers and infants and one of the criteria was that the children had to be in visible distress. All videos, cameras, laptops, etc. should have traceable embedded codes that are also tranferred anytime recorded data is transferred or downloaded onto one of them. Time to get toug on these predators.

      Semjaja - 2011-08-15 11:31

yes Angela, that's right! we should be under 24 hour surveilance, everything we do or say should be recorded and stored. that'll show those sickos. get real, it's time to get tough on these predators, yes, let's punish all of us for that actions of 1%.

  • jevoixtout - 2011-08-14 23:16

Along with murder and rape this sort of thing needs the death penalty. And how did this monster get hold of all these kids?

      Sharief - 2011-08-15 11:21

Then people want to say Islam is wrong for wanting their kids to wear appropriate clothing..thsi is one of he reasons y we want our woman to cover themselves,so that pervits dont get sexual ideas when looking at them..

      Maddy-CT - 2011-08-15 11:36

@ Sharief. Sharief, with due respect any psychologist specializing in criminology will tell you that rape is not a sexual crime - how do you explain the rape of elderly women, or why men who are impotent commit rape using an object? It is much more complex than purely a sexual urge in response to visual stimuli. It is also the reason why castration of a rapist will not guarantee that the rapist will not rape again using an object.

      Maddy-CT - 2011-08-15 11:43

Sharief, I just want to make it clear that I'm not knocking your religion, merely pointing out that rape is not a result of how women dress.

      Bambi - 2011-08-15 17:17

@Sharief - dude it doesn't matter what a woman wears if a man wants to inflict pain and rape her - don't be naieve pal men like that won't let material stop them from living out their sick perverted fantasies.

NO CELL PHONES FOR KIDS UNDER 25. NO INTERNET FOR KIDS UNDER 25. What a sick society we have become.............

      Worldwise - 2011-08-15 06:49

And just how do you propose schoolkids do research for projects? University students are usually 23 by the time they attain their degrees. How do you propose they do research without the internet? Obviously you've never studied and thats why you're making stupid comments. Since when is a 24 year old a kid? You're spouting ANCYL ideas here. Think about it.

      Sasha25 - 2011-08-15 08:23

@ Worldwise Kids can do research at the libraries - parents should take them and help them out. When I was growing up, we did not have the internet and let alone cell phones. I still managed to get 7 distinctions in matric and 2 degrees to my name and with out the internet! The kids of today are too spoiled....

      Susannomore - 2011-08-15 08:34

@Sasha25. Have you seen the state of some of our libraries today? My kids have tried this route. Lacking in resources is an understatement. The characters which hang around this side of town are also a big concern. Then you have to consider the subject matter and the questions which they are being asked to research. The teachers tell them to use the internet, as there is very little chance to pass otherwise. They are allowed to divide into groups, where at least one person has internet, so that the rest can also have a chance. No kids yet, hey Sasha? And your distinctions and degrees did little to improve your grammar, did it?

      Sasha25 - 2011-08-15 09:06

@ Susannomore I have 2 kids and I do not think they need mxit or a cellphone to get good grades or complete assignments. They have a library at school which they use for research and they have monitored use of the internet at the school when doing projects and assignments.

      Opinionated - 2011-08-15 09:09

25 year olds are no longer children, according to law a child becomes an adult at the age of 18, and is able to make the choice to have consensual sex at the age of 16. There would be a ton of laws that would have to to changed if they were to start referring to 25 year olds as children, and it would include people being tried in court for heinous crimes up to the age of 25 as a child. That definitely wouldn't benefit SA in any way.

      Susannomore - 2011-08-15 10:01

How the heck do you do resrearch using MXit? If they have monitored use of the internet, why are you saying that they shouldn't have it? Your argument is not making much sense.

      x - 2011-08-15 10:04

Sasha25 - sounds like your kids are at a distinct disadvantage. It is not the 60s anymore.

      Sharief - 2011-08-15 11:24

Follow Sharia laws(ISLAMIC LAWS)..EXAMPLE:IF A CHILD GOES OUT WEARING A MINI SKIRT-CERTAIN MEN WILL LOOK AT HER WITH LUST,EVEN MARRIED MEN...YET IS CHILD COVERS HERSELF FULLY WITH HEAD SCARF-NOBODY WILL LOOK AT HER WITH LUST,WHICH THEREFORE SHE WONT CAUSE ADULTERY,SHE WONT CAUSE MARRIED MEN'S EYES TO WONDER,DO I MAKE SENSE OR DOES ISLAM STILL OPRESS WOMAN??

      Kenno - 2011-08-15 12:51

@Sharief...Please watch a movie called the Stoning of Saroya...Dont preach against other religions whilst that barbaric behavior is still continuing in the middle east. Get off your soap box and deal with reality! Child pron is disgusting...and so is marrying off a 12 year ols child!

      schmerz - 2011-08-15 12:52

@Sharief, that makes sense, but in my opinion that is borderline cowardice. Does a woman control your every move or are you able to make your own decisions?

      schmerz - 2011-08-15 13:18

@Worldwise, so you think the internet has always been there? What were people using before that? You know since the internet exists everyone is getting lazy. There's no more "1+1=2" there's just "get me 2 from the internet" and when your child develops like that, he won't have much potential. @x, "sounds like your kids are at a distinct disadvantage" Right back at you? I'd rather have cognitive superiority than knowing a bunch of random facts strung together by a man-made network. It's like letting someone do your homework and expecting to perform during exams? Your brain is much stronger than any machine, too bad they keep esoteric knowledge out of schools, 99.9999% of us are being taken for a ride

  • Francois B - 2011-08-15 04:53

They are national unit and are probably well resourced. Maybe he means that things can't be delegated to provincial structures because they will warn other suspects in exchange for some cash and so the unit has to travel, stay in hotels, etc.?

      Ocean - 2011-08-15 08:53

These sub-humans should not be allowed to live. These poor kids will forever be changed because of what has been done to them. My heart breaks for them. Closing down mxit wont solve the problem. Besides, there are many other social network sites that can be accessed on cellphones these days.

      Deirdre - 2011-08-15 09:37

Biskit you can't blame the system (Mxit)for this. In that case we should remove cars from the road for causing accidents, or money from the banks for causing greed. Porn in all its forms would continue no matter what you removed, people would simply find another avenue. We need to find a punishment method stringent enough to stop people from considering this or any type of crime - don't just bring back the death penalty, but make it painful too ...

Well it's good to see all the outrage and there is always so much of it when there is a story like that. What's sad is there is very little action behind all the anger! This is our country and there is a lot that each of us can do. This is not an isolated incident. Children are abused everyday within our immediate social circles and amongst our families and friends. Let's start rooting it out where it begins and start reporting the cases we know of... how many times have you turned a blind eye and convinced yourself you are imaging things? Speak up people that's the only way things will change!

What a tragedy for these children! I remember my daughter at the age of 5 playing Power Rangers, or sitting in a tree pretending to be a cat. At the age of ten she was writing stories about PuppyVille. What memories will these children have of their childhoods? I hope that psychological counselling will help to mitigate the damage, and ease them on the path to a happier future. Sadly this kind of experience can never be completely erased from their psyches. Parents, never take it for granted that your children will be safe - if you don't know your childrens' friends' parents or siblings, make it your business to meet them. I would never take exception to parents wanting to meet me or my husband - I would regard those parents with respect for being good parents and consider that my children are also likely to be safe with them.
