Pretoria - The kilometre-long queue at Fountains Valley park-and-ride facility in Pretoria moved swiftly on Thursday, as buses ferried people to the viewing of former president Nelson Mandela at the Union Buildings.

Thousands of people stood in line waiting, many sheltering themselves from the sun with umbrellas and shawls.

Before entering a bus, Selaelo Rammosebudi said it was the first time she would be seeing Madiba.

"I am dedicating four hours of my time to him because he dedicated 27 years of his life fighting for me."

She had been waiting in line for a bus since 08:00, and managed to board one around 09:30.

Mandela is lying in state at the Union Buildings for the second day. Friday will be the last day.

Mandela died at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg, last Thursday, at the age of 95.

The official memorial service was held at the FNB Stadium in Soweto on Tuesday, and was attended by about 100 current and former heads of state and government. He will be buried at Qunu in the Eastern Cape on Sunday.

Friends, colleagues, comrades and family of Nelson Mandela are invited to share their memories and tributes, and to light a candle for him, on his profile at Remembered.co.za.
