Johannesburg - Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has given an update on her investigation into the upgrades at President Jacob Zuma's Nkandla homestead.

Speaking at a media conference in Pretoria, Madonsela said she was saddened that the matter had ended up in court and had taken an adversarial tone, adding that she wanted to depoliticise it.

She said the last-minute legal intervention by a cluster of security ministers to halt the release of her report was "unprecedented" and in contravention of the law, adding that no constitutional or statutory powers were cited.

Madonsela said she had noted "veiled attacks" on her office, accusing it of squandering public funds, but said her office hopes to put the "unfortunate" drama surrounding the report behind it and rebuild public trust.

She said she was no security expert, and regrets agreeing to give the provisional report to ministers.
