Johannesburg - Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has taken to social media to defend herself against what she described as an "unprovoked, unwarranted and inexplicable attack" on her in a newspaper.

Madonsela was responding to an editorial comment in The New Age newspaper on 11 November 2013, which she said she read with "much surprise and sadness".

The New Age on Friday printed a letter from Madonsela in response to the editorial piece, which she then posted on her official Facebook page, and tweeted numerous extracts from it.

"The vitriolic name calling directed at me without cogent justification, appeared in an editorial comment that is replete with insults such as 'arrogant', 'erratic', 'believing to be invincible', 'above the law', and many other things. I am still baffled as to what on earth have I done to provoke The New Age editor’s ire," Madonsela wrote.

While defending editorial independence and freedom of expression, Madonsela said her concern lay with the fact that the editorial contained logical fallacies and did not contain considered and fair criticism of her.

Madonsela explained her handling of investigations into the IEC and her accountability to Parliament which were raised in the editorial piece, and said she was grateful that the editorial had contributed to the national discourse on the role and powers of her office.

The New Age had not responded to Madonsela on Friday morning.
