Makhado reverses name change

2007-03-29 11:19
Bloemfontein - The northern Limpopo town of Makhado will change back to being called Louis Trichardt, the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) ruled on Thursday.

The SCA ruled in favour of an appeal by a group of businessmen from the town called the Chairpersons' Association against a Pretoria High Court decision. The Pretoria court had earlier dismissed the businessmen's application to review and set aside the name change.

The SCA decision sets aside the June 2003 change of name ordered by Arts and Culture Minister Pallo Jordan.

The SCA ordered that respondents Jordan and the South African Geographical Names Council pay costs.
