Malema armed with 'hot shot' lawyer

2012-09-22 14:00

Johannesbuurg - With news of his imminent arrest, expelled ANC Youth League president Julius Malema is armed with a "hot shot" lawyer to see him through the legal battle, it was reported on Saturday.

The Star newspaper reported that attorney Nicqui Galaktiou had previously and successfully defended among others Gijima, SA businessman Robert Gumede and former Zambian president Rupiah Banda's son, Henry Banda.

She is a director at Brian Kahn Incorporated Attorneys. She has 12 years experience in motion and trial work and disputing resolution matters and is head of the Commercial Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department.

Galaktiou is also a member of the International Bar Association.

Malema was expected to appear in a Polokwane court next week after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

The City Press reported on Friday that Malema faced charges of money laundering, corruption and fraud relating to his Ratanang Family Trust and its share holding in On-Point Engineering, a company that allegedly made millions from Limpopo government tenders.

How can anyone hire a civil lawyer for a criminal case and say she is a hotshot? Look at her CV .. only did civil matters. She will only appoint a " hot" advocate.

      davy.crockett.5209 - 2012-09-24 13:48

After all of the great things that Julius Malema has done for the youth and poor of this country he deserves the very best representation that is possible. Let the obvious fact that he is represented by a white woman show without a shadow of any doubt, that he embraces all the people of this great country equally and fairly. These trumped up charges should be brushed aside and Mr Malema will be back at the struggle for the social and economic emancipation of South Africa. I think that everyone who reads this article will wish Mr Malema well in his ongoing struggle.

      geraldsebanda - 2012-09-25 12:48

Interesting how these corrupt government types that blame all SA problems on the whites dont use lawyers from the Black Lawyers Association (BLA)

  • kevin.moxham.3 - 2012-09-22 14:14

How can the proclaimed 'servant of the poor' afford this - normal people just can't - he has stolen his way into this position - what a 'hippo-crite'.....!

      truthis.tway - 2012-09-22 18:39

Luzuko - Those people do not claim to champion the poor, but obviously you are not capable of understanding this as you worship your racist slug like king.

      truthis.tway - 2012-09-22 19:18

      I pity you.

      marius.vanderhoff - 2012-09-22 23:33

@ luzuko. I`ve read most of your comments - and yes I must admid that you do have good pionts on the whites and apartheid. I do agree in some aspects with you, concerning what we complain about is blindsighted, and we only see it out of our perspective - but so is yours my friend. And I`m asking the question over and over again - what would you have done if you were in malema`s position or in any position of authority TODAY. Look at the picture the last almost 20 years, and ask yourself if you would have made the same decitions. Not only stealing from the whites but from your own people to benefit yourself. Gees, if you steal only from whites and give it to the blacks, i will still understand it - especialy reading how you spew your hatred towards them - but we are talking about your people stealing from everyone and live in richness. Where could SA been and what could we(you as black people) have acomplished if the JM and the JZ`s did not steal and rob you of everything. Every department is corrupt, but you are so blinded by hate that you will accept this stealing and downfall of SA if that also means that the whities will go down. They call it cut my nose to spite my face. I will except that apartheid was wrong in many policies - can you admit that as the goverment is functioning today, that there is no bright future for all people in this country. Would you make the same decitions today, if you have the power to do so???

      edward.d.beesley - 2012-09-23 09:35

Luzuko, I agree with many of your points. Much of the hatred towards Malema is probably due to the 'tone' of coverage he receives from the media, which enjoys sensation because it sells best. I enjoy the way you've mentioned all those big shots who have stolen from the country because I've also wondered about justice of their remaining free after having embezzeled such huge amounts, while the victims of their greed struggle vainly - e.g. Brown. It irks me that it is purely the application of the technicalities and vagueness of the law, which seems to be so cunningly exploited by our "top" lawyers, that keeps them out of jail, where they belong. This, we know, is not a new phenomenon, and it's clear that it was not through mere conincidence that Shakespeare penned the famous lines, "the first thing we do is kill all the lawyers" (not that I propose such drastic measures, of course ...).

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-09-23 11:58

Fidel, I agree. Malema is stepping on toes and the toe owner doesn't like it and so Malema must hang. What I don't understand is why Malema chose a white lawyer. Or have I been right all the time about him, that his bark is worse than his bite?.

      thozi - 2012-09-23 13:58

luzuko.mtoyi - I have already started to pray for you so that you can develop and understand simple logic... if prayers are that powerful.

      jacqui.c.baumgardt - 2012-09-23 21:22

Luzuko - Most of these guys have been arrested, tried, imprisoned and their assets forfeited - no shabby shake deals for them. Wise up!

      peter.walters.1238 - 2012-09-24 11:43

I like your comments Luzuko - very fair and balanced.

  • sifiso.msimango - 2012-09-22 14:20

i thought malema is anti-white, all of a sudden hot shot white lawyer, something is not right here, surely this thug must be confused

      christelle.james.7 - 2012-09-22 14:23

Very confused indeed. Another white madam:-) Maybe he has a secret we don't know about:-) They used to say that all the time about the previous white leaders - like the other side of the bar a little too much:-)

      christelle.james.7 - 2012-09-22 15:14

Themba you are just like Malema. Why do you say to Sifiso that if we dislike Malema we dislike him too. Maybe you should start distinguishing between disliking a character and disliking a race. You appear to think it is the same thing. My dislike for Malema certainly does not reflect my feeling about his race. Comprehend. And a last thought - I think the last time, your race constantly blame my race for their failure in certain areas, never otherway around. If I fail my friend, it has nothing to do with another race...........it is my own fault.

      sekalf.nroc - 2012-09-23 09:17

Keith - here some spelling lessons for you: 1. Has he stole anything rom you - he is singular and therefore HAS 2. Proof - not prve 3. Maybe you are on heat - not maybe you on heat 3 mistakes in 1,5 lines - hmmmm... not sure who is the idiot here!

      frikdt - 2012-09-23 09:19

@keith.f.murphy: To answer your first question: No, at least not yet, but he's been giving us some very good supporting evidence of the fact. But not everything in life needs proof by a court of law in order for sensible people to draw the right conclusion. This guy has maintained a standard of living that people earning twice as much as he claimed he did, can't manage. His income came from tax payers' money; so, to answer your second question: YES. Speaking of idiots, go stand in front of your nearest mirror and you'll see one staring back at you.

  • Keg - 2012-09-22 14:24

Malema always goes on about how bad whites. You are "fighting for economic freedom." he complains about white money and white this and white that. But he hires a high powered expensive white girl to defend him. Bloody hypocrite just proves what we all knew all along he is looking after himself.

      johan.harlaar.9 - 2012-09-22 14:34

They do love his money though. Since he doesn't know the value of money {he never worked for it] he spends it easily. He is easy money and it gives some free publicity.

  • Themba Patric Sibande - 2012-09-22 14:37

Simple!can't you see that Malema does not hate whites but dumb people like you,and yes he is going to disappoint you by winning. To me also is not about your colour of your skin but about you being stupid for allowing hatred to shield your judgement

      pws69 - 2012-09-22 16:18

Malema made his bed with all of his white hatred. He deserves all the ridicule he is getting and more. You, for trying to justify it, just display your inherent ANC dishonesty. How do you know an ANC support is lying? Their lips move.

      truthis.tway - 2012-09-22 18:42

Obviously no black is good enough as a lawyer. Says a lot doesn't it. I would have thought there must be at least 10 black lawyers as good as her, that is demographic representivity is it not?

      terry.brauckmann - 2012-09-22 19:29

Please take note that malema was in the sh*t because of his hate speach against whites! When he sang 'kill the farmer, kill the boer"he did not refer to only the dumb ones! You stand to be corrected!

      kenneth.hlatshwayo - 2012-09-23 09:30

Malema will win this case. Then mines and banks will be nationalized . Land will then be expropriated without compensation from the white capitalists. Sad reality. Whether u kill him or jail him, the idea is out there.

Agreed Ernest. It is pitiful - there are plenty of excellent black lawyers out there. The champion of the poor does not think so though, and yet he professes to be their champion?

  • douglas.reid.921 - 2012-09-22 14:51

Won't it be nice when we stop seeing and hearing about this cretin every day. Forget Malema, what a pleasant thought. But then there's Floyd and Ronald and a few more of these demanding wannabes. The DA will be in power as soon as the head is black and not Godzilla. Then there will be hope for this country. All the billionaires stripped of their wealth and given to the deserving people. We don't need greedy fraudulent fat cats, ever.

  • george.pito - 2012-09-22 14:55

Yeh when they need a a lawyer or a docter the whites are good enough.

      Xavier7034 - 2012-09-22 16:19

If "Bantu Education was really so bad, please explain this aberration: Blade Nzimande attended the Roman Catholic School, Henryville, and then Plessiers Lower Primary School before going to Mthethomusha School in Edendale, the first school in the area established under the new Bantu education system. He matriculated in 1975 at Georgetown High, Edendale. He completed his Psychology Honours degree at the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, in 1980. His Masters degree is in Industrial Psychology (1981) and more recently he has been awarded a PhD for a thesis in the field of personnel management from the University of Natal. That is all somewhat perplexing is it not @khathut-hellhole?

We will wait and see if the brave tone of ur voice that u are using now will surface when u ar halfway the court case! VIVA SOUTH AFRICAN COURTS VIVA! JUSTICE WILL PREVAIL!

      pws69 - 2012-09-22 20:52

Well said Luzuko. Fana Hlongwane with his over R1 BILLION bribe in the arms deal? What about George and the missing R400 million in EC, the investigation of which was buried by the ANC. What exactly did Smuts Ngonyama DO to earn his R20 million "commission"? What of the R30 million Mbeki got from the arms deal, and why was that not questioned. What of the R6 BILLION the ANC got for selecting the FOURTH preferred vendor, and MOST EXPENSIVE, in the power station deal? Why have we not seen the result of the audit into the R100 million ANCYL kissing fest? We've had admission paperwork is missing, then NOTHING. Why does the ANC immediately stop prosecution for corruption the moment their cadre resigns, only to be "redeployed" a few months later? Why did Frene Ginwala PAY OFF THE R30 MILLION DEBT, with taxpayers money, of the ANC Travelgate thieves? The list is endless.

      FeebleGastro - 2012-09-23 07:46

Luzuko, Nelson Mandela went to jail for being found guilty on four charges of terrorism. He could have (should have) hung, together with his accomplices. Bees was found guilty of drunken driving AND culpable homicide and receive a suspended sentence of 5 years after a plea bargain which involved the victim's family, who opted to go the greedy (African) route, and go for the moola.

      FeebleGastro - 2012-09-23 09:39

Luzuko, what I explained to you is what happened in both cases. Nothing what happened there was racist. Maybe some of the roll players were racist, who knows. But not the law. Plea bargaining is part of the legal process. In the Bees case, many legal minds were of the opinion that Bees may walk on the basis of self defense, but that would have meant a lengthy and costly trial. All the parties (including the victim's family) then decided to go the plea bargain route. Where is the racism? The only racism you can find in current laws has to do with AA and BEE. That is blatant racism. Racism is alive and well in your head (and the heads of people like you). The worn out old racism card is bloody pathetic, and for you to play it makes you pathetic.

ok let me do fraud now. itl be my 1st 1 so charges can be withdrawn against me. what a load of bull and uncommon sense in thinkin. he thinks just like Malema. kwa kwa kwa

  • Rodney Moodley - 2012-09-22 17:49

is this what we teach our children???

  • Hendrik JJ Kruger - 2012-09-22 17:59

We should all realize that he's without a doubt the most uneducated fat man in SA. He should drop dead from a hart attack and the weight of his watch and save us all a lot of trouble...

  • madoda.monamudi - 2012-09-22 18:00

Good move Juju even Nelson Mandela Appoint George Bizos white lawyers.

  • dennis.hammar.9 - 2012-09-22 18:09

Ag shame...Julius has to use a white madam to defend himself!

      mafa.mtembo - 2012-09-22 19:18

Are u beind pathetic or its just a disorder you are suffering from?

      siphom.mnguni - 2012-09-22 19:43

Maybe he is a teaboy, who knows? There are too many possibilities these days. Bring the apron, the teapot, the sugar-basin and the tea cups and saucers and the teaspoons.

  • Sizwe Dlamini - 2012-09-22 18:21

I think Malema's decision to chose a white lawyer is not that good because now whites are thinking there are no competent black lawyers, lets support one of our own,100% behind Malema, come Mangaung and we loss the shower head

      truthis.tway - 2012-09-22 18:46

Yup, That is exactly it. There are no good black lawyers.

      siyanda.yeni.5 - 2012-09-22 20:33

I am a young black lawyer, still serving my articles. I kmow there are good black lawyers out there, but our government chooses to brief white lawyers! Justice minister spoke of transformation in the legal profession, but we don't see the results! They simple don't trust us! As a black lawyer you always have to work extra hard to be the best and have people believe in you

      truthis.tway - 2012-09-22 21:05

Even the racist white hating Malema, it seems, does not trust you. Of course there are excellent black lawyers. But one has to question why then such an anti white, white hating, prick like Malema would choose a white lawyer.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-09-23 12:15

Vincent.vinsaint. The lady is Greek working for a Jewish law firm. What do you mean with she isn't white she is Jewish? Are Jews not white?. If not what are they then?. Blue?. Geez.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-09-23 12:17

Sizwe Dlamini, It isn't what we thing that's important. What is important is that Malema obviously think black laywers aren't competent enough to get him off the hook. I hope you are right about Mangaung.

  • karenRSA - 2012-09-22 18:28

Are African black lawyers not good enough for him..... Remember Julius, to become a lawyer, they would not have been able to do woodwork and would have to do everything legal or they would get scrapped off the bar and roll of lawyers and they would have to pass all their exams like Mogoeng Mogoeng!

  • alexander721 - 2012-09-22 18:38

amazing, he has all this money, wonder he distributed his wealth as a man for the poor..........i remember Jesus taking whatever he had and giving to the poor. Now, you don't have to be Jesus, but Malema should stop blamming he world and then spending it's money on lawyers. Hopefully they will see the futility in trying to defend him an demand money upfront when SARS moves in.

  • sam.ntshangase - 2012-09-22 18:50

Dont worry with money Tokyo, Cassel Mathale and Mabiulu have all the money, forget Malema, R60m has already been squandered at University of the North for FYL. This is a similar case with Zuma who was bankrolled by Edwardo Dos Santos and Gadaffi

  • maake.steven - 2012-09-22 19:33

since you say you have nothing to hide, why is there a need for a hot shot lawyer?.

      lucas.shabangu.3 - 2012-09-22 19:42

Every person have a right to be represented, even current President he was presented by his lawyer while he appear in court during rape trial and corruption.

  • popeye.sailor.1884 - 2012-09-22 19:52

I had another look at that painting, I still think it is Malema hanging from Zuma’s pants !

  • pat.schutte1 - 2012-09-22 19:52

The irony of it ALL. The economic freedom fighter using a highly paid greek (white) lawyer from a jewish law firm 2 defend him!!! EISCH!!! Maybe the MADAME will get 2 FREE his ass coz obviously he has NO faith in his own black counterparts as laywers and the ultimate question WHERE does he get the money from as he has NEVER worked a honest day in his life?

  • sphala - 2012-09-22 19:55

Those who accuse Malema of being a racist please...you just make hoax of yourself, we know will always have something to say about him...when he do good or bad, he just prove you wrong by appointing a Greek or white lady, and surely that hot and lovely lady know him better than you, Mr Malema represent our interest as black and white young South Africans, those who are against Malema their in a comfort zone...* fact * do you real know how it feels to living in a shack or face a bed with an empty stomach...watch the space Hater, one day is one day am telling you. # enough said.....full stop

      pws69 - 2012-09-22 21:03

Who the heck do you think you are speaking on behalf of all the youth? You are a nothing, and the recent UCT and NMMU SRC elections prove my point. Both wins to DA Student Organisation, with more to come. I work with university students daily in Braamfontein. I have NEVER seen one of them with an ANCYL t shirt on, but I have seen several with DA t shirts on. Malema and the ANCYL might seem like they have massive support with their rent a crowds, but it is the silent majority that will speak at the polls.

      sphala - 2012-09-22 21:32

@pws69,please am not talking puppet DA here, but dream on...and I never ask which organisation you work under am not interest, just save it, am talking in a behalf of hapless people like us, I repeat apparently...watch the space, we want changes here \ SA \.

      Onke.Dali - 2012-09-23 10:08

Sphala sit down and shut up. It's weak, uneducated minds like yours that give us black youth a bad name in this country. Malema is a corrupt, egotistical

      sphala - 2012-09-23 19:12

@Onke.D.....absolutely yes, uneducated mind like ours, so you...\Pedagogy\ stay hell way from us, we need to fight our own combat and good for you who can even afford dinners every night at Restaurant...family tsa rona di a lapa moo....you \ retard \ kwaaaaaaaaks

      sphala - 2012-09-23 21:21

And you're just scared of these retards called whites, they just using dumb people like you to fight their battles,u just lack knowledge nd yet count urself educated, whenever they come into power u will suffer like us,that's when you'll realise what he's fightng for,you stupid coconut and open ur mind, you know nothing other than reading papers telling u what he does...He won't rot in jail just watch and see.
