Malema denies anti-Zuma crusade - report

2012-08-24 11:07

Johannesburg - Expelled ANCYL leader Julius Malema has denied that he was on a crusade against President Jacob Zuma during the memorial service for the Lonmin Marikana shooting, it was reported on Friday.

"I can't sit back while my people are being killed and pretend as if it is not happening," Malema was quoted as saying by the Mail&Guardian.

"I have an obligation to intervene and raise the plight of those who are abused by the state. There is a political vacuum and we occupied that space," he said.

"If we failed to do that, the wrong elements would have taken that space. We took it while the [ANC] leadership was indoors speaking to themselves."

Last Thursday, a total of 34 people were killed in a shoot-out near the mine when police tried to disperse striking miners.

More than 70 people were injured. Another 10 people had by then been killed in the violent protests earlier at the mine.

During the memorial service on Thursday, Malema told mourners that the government did not do anything for the 34 slain miners in Marikana.

"Under democracy our people will be protected. But government has turned against its people," Malema said.

He accused members of government of only attending the memorial service to pose for news cameras.

The ministerial delegation walked out after Malema spoke.

Juliarse - The gap between your ears is a vacuum occupied with thoughts of personal pocket lining. Your miner buddies don't give a damn about their dead comrades. They all left the official memorial service to come listen to your promises of "economic freedom". Epic failure.

      barry.ahern.3 - 2012-08-24 11:59

"My People are being killed"...So you are referring to the miners, who with weapons charged the police? The poeple who beleived in a muti that would make them invincible to charge the police with intent to kill? That beleive in lawlessness? Actually makes perfect sense, i retract my shock, should have expected it.

      RiD123 - 2012-08-24 12:02

Seriously, when is this fat tub of talking lard going to trip over his own bottom lip and fall back into the hole he came from?

      UNITY - 2012-08-24 12:48

Neither Julius nor the Government, nor the the unions, nor Lonmins, intervened to avert the deaths of the miners. Now it appears that after a commission of enquiry, we will know by February 2012 ,what happened , why it happened, who is responsible, andd how to prevent it going forward. This article states that Julius is using the matter for political gain, and so would the ANC. So who actually is for real? And will we ever find Leadership that will take this country forward, and please don't say DA. We need much more than that. Everyone today is out for political points ..and use of politics to live a lifestyle! And be in the limelight! Julius is no exception, just another hypocrite!

      samantha.ungerer.1 - 2012-08-24 12:50

Dearest Nhamo Dzenyika- i have read your comment two times and i cant believe that you can write Malema and Hero in the same paragraph, this to me is a shame. when i think of a hero i think of Mr Nelson Mandela, I think of Mother Teresa, I think of a man saving a child, i think of police locking up a rapist, i think of a grandmother saving her grandchildren. I not at all think of Malema, he is no Hero not even close, I am sickened by the thought of you breathing the same air as me, if he had any hope at redemption it is all lost now. I know some of you think if malema is in rule he'll have the white community running for the hills but let me tell you even if that may happen in some cases i can tell you so will investers. So what it comes down to is Mr I D I O T Malema would finally be a hero when he just shuts the hell up and dies!!!!!!! Point Made

      kala.bafazi - 2012-08-24 12:58

      Nhamo - I bet he can't draw a conclusion.

      makgale.makgalemele - 2012-08-24 16:50

. . . those miner buddies could n't have gone to a service also attended by their killers. This government has turned against its own people. We get no service from all Departments. Kala, you must be having books that were left by your grandparents. Maar this administration cannot deliver or even burn few books that they have. Burning books? Potholes for some of us in rural areas are a means to fill pockets then kill each other. PS. By the nature does not allow vacuum, then there must be something bettween those ears. That is why he was followed to "his" tent for service arranged by him. Really there must be something. . .

  • michele.holmes.1238 - 2012-08-24 11:37

You know, Julius makes a great point here, he is 100% right. The only problem is WHY he has made that point. It is only to further his own archaic ideas of democracy, to fill his pockets with wealth, loot and pillage until there is nothing left, and rule from his palace with an iron fist for the rest of his life. He will be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay worse than Zuma could ever hope to be (no matter how hard Zuma practices), and one can only hope that the uneducated revolutionary masses understand this. Probably not though.

  • terry.burne - 2012-08-24 11:38

Just a political opportunist looking to exploit a tragic situation - pity these people are so uneducated they can't see it for what it is.

      oliver.nathan.73 - 2012-08-24 12:34

A good deal of what malema has to say is legitemate. this type of grinding poverty and inequality that the majority in this country is unsustainable, nay, a ticking time bomb. it just leaves me speechless how malema supporters seem to ignore his clearly ill-gotten wealth, thus malema can only pay lip service to the legitimate concerns of the poor and working class because he is a political vulture, not a revolutionary. He is south africa's very own General Pinochet

This young man should just stop talking nonsense. Why isn't he speaking about the police officers who were killed, and the non-striking workers who were assaulted by the strikers? His talks are not about those people but his hidden agendas. People must stop listening his rubbish, if he doesn't consider President Zuma his President, then how can he consider himself a Proudly South African? He needs to get a life...

      Kokwana Madonoro - 2012-08-24 13:31

Harold, I agree with u. Those 2 police officers were butchered like animals, 2 security guards were burnt inside their vehicle all by the protesters yet Mr Malema is not even saying a word about their murders. Do they deserve to die?

      vivian.harris.73 - 2012-08-24 13:18

Ex-ANCYL leader Julius Malema has called for Zuma and his police minister to resign\r\nThat to me is anti-Zuma. Can't his small brain remember what he said a few days ago?

  • ardenharvey - 2012-08-24 13:14

People..I urge you to allow Julius to continue on his parade. If he was the leadership of the ANCYL; then I ask, is the ANC doomed with this quality of future leadership? I’d lean towards saying yes. Whats great to see is that people of all races, all gender and all historical or current inequalities are viewing the ANCYL/ANC with great disdain! We need leadership that will make controversial decisions for the better of the county and its people. We need a goverment that will improve every households situation and allow every business to be successful, providing a platform for heterogeneous growth.... JULIUS MALEMA and his gang of puppets do not possess the necessary skills to run this country, let alone a corner 7/11. JULIUS and the ANC continue to undo themselves and its no longer the white minority who think like this.

  • herman.venter.14 - 2012-08-24 13:30

Dear "The Accountant" I dont believe it is a race issue but much more of a political issue. With Mr. Malema going on this way there is really hope to split the controling party and this can only be a good thing.

      TheAccountant - 2012-08-24 18:43

I agree with you that it is a political issue.

Hell, everyone can see what you are trying to do. Please get out of politics completely and stop embarrasing yourself. You and who ever you choose are not going to run this country any better, because guess what, it's already F()-up! Sit down and think about it! I wonder who is really posing for the cameras? And do yourself a favour, STOP BUYING FACE BECAUSE IT IS NOT ABOUT THE PEOPLE FOR YOU BUT YOUR OWN AGENDA! It makes you look WEAK!!!

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2012-08-24 14:17

Julius in case power suddenly scrambled your brain, that was a memorial for the poor miners who were used like a soiled piece of toilet paper and thrown down the toilet. Whoever, is responsible for their deaths has blood on their hands. These dead miners did not want to die, but they were coersed into taking up arms as there were misinfored about the real reason behind the violence. This was a day for mourning and not for trying to stir up trouble, at least you could have kept your big trap closed for once and let these people mourn. These miners have gone to an early grave, sent there by somebody who misinformed and misled them, that somebody has blood on their hands. No matter what you said or felt, it was a day of mourning, and you had no right to be disrespectful and turn it into a political slandering match. You need to learn some manners.
