Johannesburg - Julius Malema requested time to study a docket on speeding and other charges against him when he appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

This was confirmed by Gauteng traffic police spokesperson Obed Sibasa.

"His legal team requested the case docket and time to go through or study the docket and advise their client for a possible plea," Sibasa said in a statement.

He said Malema had apologised for committing or breaking road rules.

"However, we are convinced that we have a water-tight case and looking at a harsh sentence or fine."

Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters, was charged with reckless and negligent driving after he was arrested in December for driving at 215km/h in a 120km/h zone.

Sibasa said a number of fatal crashes had occurred in the province as a result of excessive speed and the province was intent on prosecuting those in the wrong.

"As Gauteng traffic police, we will not hesitate to arrest, irrespective of who you are, your social standing, religious or political affiliation," he said.

Journalists were denied entry into the courtroom by security guards. They claimed they were given orders not to allow any media representatives inside.

Justice department spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga apologised for the treatment. He said the media played an important role in the fight against crime.

The matter was postponed to 28 February.
