Pretoria - Mamelodi East, where service delivery protests turned violent earlier this week, was quiet on Wednesday morning, Pretoria police said.

"The situation is oraait [okay], no problem," said Captain Johannes Maheso.

A strong police contingent remained in the area after two people were arrested for public violence on Tuesday afternoon.

The police had to fire rubber bullets at protesters who were throwing stones at cars and blockading roads leading in and out of the township.

Maheso said the police hoped for a quieter day on Wednesday.

"We haven't heard of anything that might trigger more protests," he said.
