Johannesburg - A 75-year-old man was found murdered in his
Weltevreden Park home in Roodepoort, hours after he failed to fetch his
grandchildren from school, Beeld reported on Friday.
Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs said Derek Cornelius's
daughter, Lindsay, went to his house on Wednesday afternoon and found her
father's body in his bedroom.
"He always fetched the children from school. She became
suspicious and worried when he failed to arrive, so she went to his
house."
Jacobs said it looked as though Cornelius had been beaten to
death, but autopsy results would reveal more details.
"There were no signs of forced entry, but two
cellphones and an XBox had been stolen."
Cornelius's neighbours said there had been a surge in crime
in their area, and that residents were very concerned, even though they had
increased community policing efforts.
Robert Perry, who lived about 2km from Cornelius, said his
home had been broken into on Thursday, and that police had apprehended two
suspects.
