Johannesburg - A police warrant officer was shot dead in Rocklands near Uitenhage on Tuesday, Eastern Cape police said.
Captain Stanley Jarvis said Warrant Officer Tessa Steyn, 43, was shot dead allegedly by her former husband Fanus Rautenbach at around 04:00.
He said two young children were woken by gunshots early on Tuesday morning in the house they were staying in at a Rocklands smallholding.
They found the bodies of Steyn and Rautenbach in the living room.
Rautenbach allegedly shot Steyn dead before turning the gun on himself, Jarvis said.
Steyn was attached to the Motherwell police station and Rautenbach was a former policeman, he was working for a security company at the time of his death.
The couple were formerly married but divorced at the time of the shooting.
He said two cartridges and a 9mm pistol were found at the scene.
A murder and inquest docket had been opened.
