Tonga - The case against a man accused of raping his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint was struck off the roll in the Tonga Magistrate's Court on Friday due to lack of evidence.

"I am withdrawing your case because there is no evidence that can lead to the court to prosecute you," Magistrate Hazel Khoza told the 40-year-old from Mangweni, near the Swazi and Mozambican border.

According to Tonga police spokesperson Mzwandile Nyambi, he was arrested after his 32-year-old ex-girlfriend reported that she was raped around 18:30 on 3 January.

"We got information that the victim and the accused had previously had an affair but separated a long time ago," Nyambi said.

He said the woman reported that the accused had given her a lift, but drove past her village and raped her at gunpoint.

"She told us that he drove to the nearby bushes where he forced her to undress and raped her at gunpoint without using a condom," Nyambi said.

He allegedly left her at the scene.

She walked home and told her elders what happened.

The man was arrested, charged with rape, and granted R1 000 bail.
