Johannesburg - One man has been arrested and more than R56 000 was recovered by police after an ATM was bombed in Orlando in Soweto on Wednesday morning.
Captain Phillemon Khorombi said police, stationed near the railway line in Orlando, heard a blast around 01:10.
When they arrived on the scene of the ATM bombing, six men opened fire on them.
Police returned fire.
One man surrendered to police while the other five managed to flee.
The arrested man was found in possession of a firearm which had been reported stolen from the Linden police station.
Khorombi said the Standard Bank ATM had been badly damaged and money was lying on the floor.
"About R56 760 was found on the scene. We're not sure how much (money) was taken and some was also damaged by the explosion," Khorombi said.
