Johannesburg - A man was arrested on Monday morning after a
tavern owner was shot and killed in Zondi, Soweto, Gauteng police said.
The man, 25, and his three accomplices went to a house in
the area. They forced the door open, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubele said.
"The tavern owner woke up to check what was happening
after hearing the noise. They shot him," said Makhubele.
The 58-year-old man was taken to a local hospital where he
died.
Police found two empty cartridges at the scene and a bullet
of a 9mm firearm.
Robbery
While at the scene, police heard gunshots coming from White
City. They called for backup and went to the area.
Makhubele said a shoot-out ensued between four men and
police. Robbers abandoned goods they allegedly stole from another house. No one
was hurt in the shoot-out.
One man was arrested and three were still at large. Police
linked them to the attempted robbery and the murder of the tavern owner.
The arrested man would appear in court soon on charges of
murder, armed robbery and attempted robbery.
