Cape Town - A 25-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the rapes of a baby girl and young boy in Ceres, Western Cape police said on Thursday.

The suspect is a farm worker in the Ceres area.

"He is due to make a court appearance today [Thursday] in the Ceres Magistrate's Court where he will face two charges of rape," according to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut.

The 4-month-old girl was sleeping in bed with her parents in the early hours of Saturday 3 August 2013 when she and a 7-year-old boy, who was also in the house, were taken outside and raped.

The baby girl was admitted to the Red Cross Children's Hospital in Cape Town and underwent reconstructive surgery, Sapa reported.

A 32-year-old suspect was arrested two days later but released as he could not be linked to the case.

"Crimes against children are regarded our top priority, and we will not relax any of our efforts when a suspect in this regard is sought. We are pleased with the outcome of our investigations so far and would like to extend our appreciation to the Ceres community who assisted us during the recent weeks," said Traut.
