Johannesburg - A man was arrested in Steytlerville, Eastern Cape, in connection with raping a child and her mother was arrested for child negligence, Willowmore police said on Tuesday.

"Parents left their 6-year-old daughter alone in their house while they went out drinking at the local tavern," Warrant Officer Matthews Melani said.

"When they came back late on Monday night, their child was missing and they ran to all the nearby houses to look for her.

"The child had already been raped by the time she was found."

A resident had seen a man walking with the child and she was found in the veld near the Vuyowethu location, where the family resided.

The child's mother was detained and the child placed in the care of neighbours while social workers looked for a suitable placement.

Both the mother and the 35-year-old man will appear in the Steytlerville Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
