Johannesburg - A man was arrested in Uniondale on Wednesday for possession of contraband cigarettes with a street value of R500 000, police said.
"SAPS members based in Oudtshoorn stopped a silver Isuzu bakkie with one occupant around 1.30pm at a roadblock about 25km outside Uniondale," said Captain Bernadine Steyn.
"The vehicle [travelling from Queenstown to George] was searched, during which 60 boxes of illegal cigarettes were found and confiscated."
The 31-year-old man was arrested and while being transported to Uniondale police station, he attempted to bribe a police offer.
"The suspect, an Ethiopian citizen residing in Queenstown, is expected to appear in the Uniondale Magistrate's Court soon," said Steyn.
