Durban - A 33-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a senior superintendent, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Monday.
Superintendent Jay Naicker said the suspect was arrested in KwaMashu on Sunday.
Inanda policeman Superintendent Frans Bothma, 44, and two colleagues were on crime prevention duties in KwaMashu's K Section last week when the incident took place.
The trio noticed a black Volkswagen Polo that aroused their suspicions and approached the car. They instructed the three occupants to get out of the vehicle.
One of the occupants alighted and shot the officer with a high calibre rifle. Police returned fire and the suspects sped off in the car.
Bothma was declared dead at the scene.
Days later, police put up a R200 000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspects.
It was unknown on Monday if the weekend arrest was as a result of information provided to the police for the reward.
