George - A man has been arrested for murder after the body of his girlfriend was found in their house in Nekkies, Knysna, Western Cape police said on Tuesday.

"On Sunday evening... the suspect had an argument with his 20-year-old girlfriend, Wioneda Stroebel, during which he allegedly hit her with a hammer on her head," said Captain Bernadine Steyn.

"Shortly after the incident, the couple went to sleep and when the suspect tried to wake her up yesterday [Monday] morning at approximately 03:15, she already had passed away."

The man contacted Stroebel's parents and told them what happened. They called police, who arrested the man soon afterwards at the scene.

He was expected to appear in the Knysna Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
