Man arrested with abalone in Cape Town
Johannesburg - A 19-year-old man was arrested in Hout Bay, Cape Town, on Thursday for possession of perlemoen (abalone) with a street value of R1m, Western Cape police said.
He was caught at about 06:00 after police received a tip-off, Warrant Officer November Filander said in a statement.
"Police followed up the information and later spotted the white Nissan LDV coming from the Hangberg area."
Police stopped the bakkie on Victoria Road. They found 40 bags filled with 2 654 perlemoen, covered by black plastic bags.
The man, from Grassy Park, was expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
