Johannesburg – A North West farmer and his wife allegedly beat a man to death after they accused him of stealing a sheep, police said on Thursday.

Moses Mosepele, 45, and two of his neighbours from an informal settlement in Stella, were looking for wood on the farm Soutpanfontein on Tuesday afternoon when they were accused of stealing a sheep, police spokesperson Captain Paul Ramaloko said.

The farmer, his wife and eight of their employees and friends allegedly kidnapped and assaulted them. The three allegedly had boiling water poured over them, were whipped with a car’s fan belt and locked in a cold room.

Police were called and allegedly joined in the assault when they arrived.

Police officers took Mosepele back to his girlfriend in Stella. He was declared dead at a local clinic. His two friends were taken to a local hospital with burn wounds and other injuries.

The 10 would appear in the Vryburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping and assault.

North West police commissioner Major General Jacob Tsumane condemned the police officers’ alleged conduct. He has assembled a team to investigate the matter.
