Johannesburg - A 23-year-old man was found dead at the back seat of a crashed car on the R555 road in Witbank, Mpumalanga, on Saturday morning, paramedics said.

ER 24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said the car was found in bushes on the side of road.

"The driver of the vehicle was not found at the scene when paramedics arrived," she said.

Jackson said due to the severity of his wounds, it was established that the man had been a victim of an alleged assault, which had taken place near his home in Phola .

"The driver seemed to have been attempting to rush the victim to a hospital in Witbank... where approximately two kilometres from town on the R555, the vehicle veered off the road and crashed into the roadside bushes."

The man was declared dead at the scene.

Mpumalanga police were not immediately available to comment on a possible murder investigation.
