Johannesburg - A man was burnt beyond recognition when his shack caught fire in Devland informal settlement south of Johannesburg on Sunday, Johannesburg emergency services said.

"It is not known as yet what might be the cause of the fire, however our fire investigation team will be investigating the cause," said spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.

He said the shack caught fire at around 02:00.

In a separate incident 17 shacks were destroyed by a fire in Kya Sand north of Johannesburg on Sunday.

Mulaudzi said there were no injuries reported during the incident.

"We therefore would like to urge communities to look after their heating and lighting appliances like paraffin stoves and candles since they are the main cause of fires in the informal settlement."
