A MAN was burnt to death and eight others were seriously injured after a spate of accidents in and around Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

A man sustained critical injuries in a truck accident along Market Road yesterday after his truck veered across the median and slammed into the side of another truck.

Paramedics, the fire department and other services said the critically injured man was trapped in the mangled wreckage of his vehicle.

While firemen used the jaws of life to free the man, paramedics clambered into the wreckage to stabilise him.

In another collision yesterday morning, seven people were injured after a taxi, bakkie and car collided on Chota Motala Road.

According to ER24’s Russel Meiring, the patients were treated for injuries ranging from soft tissue injuries to minor lacerations. Once treated, the patients were transported to Northdale Hospital.

Elsewhere, a truck driver died after his truck burst into flames on the R56 in Richmond.

Meiring said paramedics found the wreckage of a truck on the side of the road and the cargo of wooden beams spread across the entire scene.

Prior to the arrival of paramedics, the fire department had extinguished the fire, which had broken out when the truck hit a rock embankment.
