Johannesburg - One person was burnt to death and three others were injured when their vehicle lost control and rolled several times on the N3 in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday morning, paramedics said.

The driver lost control of the vehicle near Marianhill before it rolled and ejected three of its occupants through broken windows, Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said.

The fourth occupant of the vehicle was trapped inside the wreckage after the crash leading to him being burnt alive when the car caught fire, Wicks said.

Paramedics arrived at the scene to find the car completely alight and the injured strewn about the freeway.

They also found one of the three injured sustained critical injuries and intubated him before placing him on a manual ventilator.

He was together with the other injured people taken to nearby hospitals.
